Ethanol has never been viable cost-wise as it has always been heavily subsidized. It just hasn't mattered as much until now.

Anyway, the solution is fairly straightforward: Drill our own resources on the continental shelves and Alaska, build refineries and nuclear power plants. Energy independence + lower prices follow, until we can get some kind of real alternative to oil in the next 20 yrs or so.

That is reality, along with the realization that it doesn't make a bit of difference what kind of light bulb you use when China and India are factored into the pollution equation.

Incidentally I can't think of any citizens of any country who are concerned with any interests more than their own.

Remember 2 years ago when Bush talked about biofuel using switchgrass, and everyone made fun of him? It doesn't sound like such a bad idea now. There should definitely be more research and effort put into cellulosic ethanol, so we can go back to using food for food.

One possible good thing about the price of corn being pushed through the roof - hopefully manufacturers will stop using so much HFCS in everything and maybe switch back to cane sugar.

Ok Nicholas why did you have to drag my beloved PS3 into this post. I for one would rather have had you bash a 360 over my ps3 anyway thanks, this was very interesting. FYI me and my buddy converted his old diesel benz to bio fuel it works out ok. But he is constantly mixing this crap in his garage it stinks and after all thats involved in making it yourself id alomost rather pay $4 a gallon than to deal with the tedious task of making your own bio fuel.
