Time Warner Cable now at 100 free HD channels. Too bad lots of them stink.

Time Warner Cable in New York adds a bunch of HD channels to its lineup today, chief among them Fox Business Channel HD and Disney HD. The e-mail it sent me this morning touts the fact that all TWC customers can now enjoy 100 free (for some reason “free” is capitalized in the e-mail, like it’s a proper noun) HD channels, never mind that lots of those channels are junk (like Fox Business… pretty sure if I wanted business news I’d read the Financial Times).

Still, it’s nice to wake up with a few extra HD channels. I hear that many of these so-called HD channels, like History Channel HD, are simply upconverted versions of the standard-def channel and not real HD.

  • Just be glad that you’re getting HD channels, my local provider only offers like 10 or so channels (only like 2 of them I’d watch) and you have to pay for them. (http://www.knology.com/residential/cable/hdtv.cfm)

I would kill for TBS HD, CNN HD, and some of the others listed.

  • Yeah I have Time Warner and I’ve got like 5…the basics…plus Discovery which is awesome. They’re ripping me off (surprise!)

    • How much extra do pay for your channels? We HAVE to subscribe to digital cable (channels over 100) in order to subscribe to HD, it’s so stupid. Our bill ended up being like $130-$160 just to get HD channels, so I get them over the air with a $9 antenna, take that cable companies.

  • Free my ass!!

Have to have basic cable + digital cable + HD + digital phone + Road Runner + Road Runner Turbo.

They refuse to sell me the “new” fake HD channels unless I have all the above. That’s the problem when there is zero competition.

And yes they are around 540p “HD”. Hell so not even 720p. Sad!!! Rip off and should be illegal!!

  • I’ve had an HDTV for 5 years and my cable provider as of June 2008 only delivers 19 channels(TW,Los Anegeles .They are not 1080p but 1080i and the majority of the time the broadcasters do not even gives us 720p! Whats the point of standards when noone conforms to them?
Does anyone else feel cheated when you can get over 60 free channels over the air waves?

First its All-Digital (BS analog), then HD (BS 480i expanded to 720 and 1080 ie Fox)

    I want to scream.

I have given them my business for too much of my money and now im going to satellite.

  • How can TWC advertise themselves as being the “Home of Free HD” when you have to pay $7.20 per month for a cable box? I get all the channles I want without a cable box. Some of them come in in HD without a cable box but I’d like a few more in HD (CNN, Discovery, NaT GeO, etc.).

TWC explained to me that the digital HD cable broadcast is free, but the cable boz is not. Isn’t that like called road a freeway after you’ve had to pay a toll? It’s free to drive on the freeway but you have to pay a toll to get there.

  • I love the free HD. 90 bucks is a small price to pay for an HD DVR and tons of HD channels. Looks very nice in our living room.

    • Free my big fat butt …. I’m in NYC .. if i only buy “basic” cable .. I get CBS, NBC, ABC all the vanilla channels .. BUT I am not entitled to CBS-HD, NBC-HD, ABC-HD etc … if they were in fact “free” .. then if I can get CBS-SD .. then I should be entitled to CBS-HD .. what gives?
