Deutsche Telekom eyeing Sprint, wants T-Mobile to be #1 in the US

This isn’t the first I’ve heard about T-Mobile’s parent company Deutsche Telekom possibly looking to acquire Sprint and I still don’t see it happening, but stranger things have happened. Sprint is currently the 3rd largest operator in the US with T-Mobile ranked 4th. If DT were to merge or takeover Sprint, T-Mobile would shoot straight to the top of heap, but that’s easier said than done.

Sprint’s stock is currently hovering around $8/share and that would be an easy acquisition for DT considering the Euro is so strong. But why would a GSM network provider who is currently rolling out their 3G network want a CDMA network? Also, will the German government who still owns a third of the company allow DT to basically become a US company?

  • Why would DT become a US company? That’s not true.

They just buy Sprint to get T-Mobile bigger in the US just like they did it with other carriers in the uk, netherlands, austria etc.

    There’s no difference.

  • I’ve seen a GSM carrier and CDMA carrier merge before, it happened with a regional carrier (PCS Wireless) and Alltel. They allowed both GSM and CDMA phones on their network for about 3-6 months and after that if they didn’t upgrade to a free or discounted phone on the new GSM network, their old phones wouldn’t work.

Yeah it would take alot of time and money to merge the two networks and provide GSM service across Sprints network, but it wouldn’t be the end of the world.

I’ve been a T-Mobile customer for almost 8 years and I’ve loved every minute of it, this would allow T-Mobile to grow and provide everyone with the great service, cheap phones, and amazing customer service that I’ve grown to love (lame, but true.)

I second that emotion. My T-Mob service + Sprint innovative phones + SERO pricing = :-)

  • Im an american sales manager for tmobile and ill tell u one thing..if tmobile and sprint merge, reguardless of he cost, everyone in america and europe will benefit especially with sprint venture into wi.max with clearwire. It will create an iternational stimulation..making both the euro and the american dollar stronger because lets face it amricans hate tmobiles service and see it as a last resort and we would all like to see that change..fuck verizon!
