Sprint is getting ready for the fight of its life with the Samsung Instinct. While I actually like the Instinct, they’re trying to take Stevie head on, which is probably not a good idea. Generally, however, these videos are pretty cute and it’s nice to know CDMA folks can get themselves some iPhone-alikeness… unless the 3G iPhone is CDMA.
Sprint has a long row to hoe here. The Instinct is a strong phone with a great new interface, so I have no problem with it. However, doing a head-to-head against everyone’s favorite big hunk of chrome is going to be rough, especially as reviews come in. At least they’re being funny about it.

Problem is, Samsung is taking aim at a moving target. Come June (or shortly thereafter) Apple will probably announce iPhone v2 (if news reports and speculation is to be believed), and going by Apple’s reputation it will be a substantially improved phone. At that point, the Instinct will probably get blown out of the water.
If the Instinct was being released *now* it might stand some chance, or if they were tryng to position themselves as a cheaper alternative thats as good as the iphone… but if its not coming out until June anyway, going head to head on features is probably not going to pay off.
iPhone will have GPS in June. Game Over.
Sprint has a better network and the Simply Everything Plan for $99.99 (with fees + taxes it’s $107)… the only thing that it does not include is International roaming so unless I make a lot of calls from outside the US, my bill will never be higher… Game Over…
the iphone will have gps in june and so doesthe instict but it will never have live t.v or recording video
Are you willing to put money on that assertion: “Never have live tv”?!?!? You’re forgetting about the iPhones rich SDK which can have anyone making a video recording program from storing camera snap frames.
palm pre……….. game over i phone game over!
Hate to say it, but the iPhone got blown away by that one.
Wait until the show a video comparing internet speed. Iphone won’t stand a chance against Rev-A speeds.
Don’t know if they were ready for it yet but I was looking online and I came across the video comparing internet connection speeds and the IPhone of course lost!! Can’t beat Rev-A Speeds…
By the way here is the link:
http://nowisgood.com/#Side_By_Side/&type=m
That is bullshit!!!!! the instict is not better than the iPhone!!! The iPhone will soon come with a v2 and it will twice as better!!! No no… wait Im sorry, three times as better than instict!!!
Verizon’s niche is the best network, AT&T’s niche is the iPhone, Sprint’s niche is the “best calling plan” by a mile. I would rather have the “best calling plan by a mile” and still be able to get comparable hardware… Think of how much you would have to pay with AT&T to have the same service as a Sprint user on the Simply Everything Plan with the Instinct (which is going to retail for under $300)… My bill is $107 including fees + taxes. What would yours be to have unmilinited everything? $150? $160? Maybe more? Let’s be honest, to use the iPhone to it’s full potential you would need and unlimited everything plan… Buying an iPhone on a limited plan is like buying a Ferrari and putting 87 octane gas in it… What’s the point?
Paul, you’re right. Fact is, as an iPhone user (and don’t get me wrong, I LOVE it), I joined AT&T. Howvere, I was switching from Verizon anyway, and all my co-workers were ATT, so I figured what the hell. A few points though:
1. My iPhone is Jailbreaked (www.ziphone.com). This means it’s compatible with Sprint, AT&T, Cingular, pretty much anyone using a SIM card. Further, since I JB’d it prior to activation, they couldn’t get me on their rip-off “iPhone Plan”, meaning I’m paying $109.99/mo, unlimited everything.
2. The SDK for the iPhone has ALREADY produced every feature (GPS, Video Recording, etc.) that the Instinct is boasting about, with the exception of TV. The 3G ver. 2 has these functions native. TV is a hop skip and a jump.
3. This is APPLE people. I’m a Window’s user, first to admit it. I don’t like MacOS. I’m not a fanboy. But, they’ve spent eons working on this damn thing, and released it BIG. The fact that the Instinct is a UI and visual knock-off (which isn’t a bad thing; go with what works) indicates to me that they’re basing it on the iPhone. Not working on it for years, but frantically trying to catch up.
I agree Paul. At least you ahve sense. To those who think teh advantage to Apple is how long they been out with their phone is just another stupid analopy. Why? Sony beat Nintendo and Sega in its first year with the original Playstation. Microsoft is beating Sony with it’s second generation system agaist Sony’s 3rd. In fact Nintendo proved it was best to release a system after another company so you can show how much the previous company is horrible.
Iphone is poular bec it is what it is. But it isn’t better. They simply had no one to compete with. They are using technology that was made by someone else. Palm alreday had touch screen phones. So Apple touch screen is no big deal. They just used prettier icons and ppl went ape over it. The glitz of the package of this overprices itunes player ios what the hype was all about. Most ppl didnt even know what teh iphone could and couldnt do. they simply bought it bec it is a unique looking beautiful phone. n\but as with anything that is pretty outside, once you get it home you find ot what a headache it is to own it. Ask any male moviestar. The Instinct has yet to have software issues. Apple is still fixing Ipod issues whicg is all eth iphone is. Its an IPOD that you can make calls on. I decide i would rather have teh itouch, but when instinct came out, I see i ave teh benefit of all of Apple portable products and more. The ipod phone is a awesome toy, but teh instinct is even more so. The iphone is son’t ps2 and instinct is ms xbox. It isn’t better maybe by name, it is better in what you get.
As another said…to get full use of the iphoe it would cost you $200 permonth and u still wont have all that instinct offers.
iphone will not work on sprint, even jailbreaked because sprint is CDMA and does not use sim cards. You’ll occasionally see a sprint phone that will accpet a sim card, but those are dual/tri/or quad band phones that work internationally.
Hi, how did you go about jailbreaking your phone and negotiating such a competitive plan? I’m looking to get the 3G iPhone in a month, but don’t want to get screwed.
fanboy much today?
How can you say that until you see the instinct…No one will now how good or bad this phone will be until it comes out and we can compare it ourselves. I think taking it head on with the iphone was a bad idea…I know they want to be as good as the iphone but it has been out longer then the instinct has obviously. The first version of the instinct may not compare to the first or second version of the iphone but maybe over time they will both offer the same things.
Like most other have state you cant compare the two especial with apple getting ready to launch v2 of the iphone i myself want to get an iphone but glad that i did not. like most new phones there is always something wrong with the 1st one. So for the instinct it has a way to go all it did was add what the iphone was missing and take what the iphone already had. The iphone was the eye opener for most providers and now they are all trying to beat it and each phone will only get better and better than the other.
I’ve was one of the impatient bleeding edge types that got the iPhone when it first came out. The only disappointing thing to me was the price-drop. The phone itself performed remarkably well for a first run. Apple just skimped on what I would call basic mobile phone features: voice reck, picture mail, video, etc. That’s what pissed me off. I think the advantage Instinct has is that it had a chance to hear what iPhone users have been complaining about. They can address those issues before their product launch.
ok
Lets say it’s not any better than the new iPhone … but cheaper phone and way cheaper to use … do your math!! Apple doesn’t pay my bills … I DO!!
iPhone 3G – $199 (8GB), $299 (16GB) You can still pay you bills. How many GB storage does the instink have?
i think he’s referring to the plans, instinct is cheaper, sprints plans are cheaper overall
Dude, realistically this bullshit is like taking a souped up honda and trying to race against a dodge viper or something. Sprints plans are great don’t get me wrong, and i have a sprint device ( my company is a sprint reseller) but for folks who have an apple computer ( and the growing masses that are shifting to apple) the i phone is a quick and viable solution. Not to mention the user interface on the i phone is great, along with wifi, along with a plethora of new applications available for the i phone, along with voip skype calls with wifi… Point blank this is only release 1 of the i phone. Wait till release 2 happens with all the extra perks that the instinct boasts about. Then what. Then apple will release some type of dual screen flip i phone with video conferencing available. Ill prob get the instinct when it drops, and i will still use my i pod nano right next to it in my other pocket. Y ? because everyone and their mom has i tunes a d i have music on my shit form all over east bumfuck and everyones itunes. It is what it is bitches
Why didn’t Apple just offer all of these bells and whistles with the first run? GPS navigation technology was out there when the first run of the iPhone came out. They do it this way because they want you to drop $500 on a new phone every 6 months… I don’t know, I guess my issue is not with the iPhone itself but with it’s carrier. If Sprint offered the iPhone, I would probably already have it. For me personally, the service carry’s more weight to me than the device. If the carrier sucks then the device automatically loses some value… I can talk on my phone 10 hours a day or I can send 10,000 text mesages or I can use 10 GB on web browsing/e-mail or I can be roaming in Alaska and I know my bill will never exceed $99.99… I also like that one of your points was about using Skype on the iPhone (their only free service is Skype to Skype calling). Why the hell would I pay for another phone line when I am on the simply everything plan and have unlimited minutes? I actually used to pay for a VOIP line as a second phone (so I could keep my cell minutes down) before the simply everything plan came out. Maybe 6 months from now another carrier will offer a similar calling plan to Sprint’s, but until they do Sprint has the upper hand…
I am all about the Apple products and carry an iPhone. However, I welcome the Samsung Instinct because it’s going to keep Apple on their toes in terms of feature-set and pricing. I was pretty disappointed going from my $100 mobile phone to a $400 iPhone that didn’t support picture mail or voice recognition. Competition is healthy because it keeps us consumers from getting stuck with crappy products. There are no other touch-phones in the US market, so you are stuck with Apple. Hell, I may even defect if the iPhone 2.0 release doesn’t contain picture mail!
i think paul is a freaking genius and a great advocate for the samsung instinct. screw the iPhone its so overrated my grandma has one. get over it. out with the old and in with the new
I’ll have to agree with analyzing the plans. I switched to Sprint because of their unlimited plan and I used to hate them because of their customer service and mysterious added fees from when I had them 4 years ago, but they came a long way. I have a Pearl now and could care less for the iPhone. The lack of basic features on such a high priced phone that requires such a high price plan is ridiculous and redundant. iTunes? Are you serious? There are WAY more ways to buy music, even Sprint has their own Music store so who cares about iTunes. As far as synchronizing, files can be backed up on the SD card and there are programs adaptable to OS X. For the features, the technology, the productivity, the re-occuring bills, the price of the phone, removable battery (and two of them!), you name it, I’ll go with the Instinct anyday…..that is unless Apple is willing to drop the price AND add ALL those features to the iPhone 2, and ATT drop their plan to match Sprint’s. Yeah, how likely is THAT to happen
you guys that think the instict is going to be beter you will sadly be mistaken one things you guys dont seem to realize is that the iphone runs on an operating system … do you know what that means … it means that just by connecting it to your computer you can get updates new features and enhancements … that is the wonderful thing about Apple they are always looking to make them better. so yea from the looks of it the iphone v2 maybe on the way but even the v1 has this capability so all around the iphone is and will always be the best. lets see sprint try to handle something that they know nothing about … Apple specializes in computers and technology .. its a no brainer
Apple specializes in BS and propaganda and competition bashing. iPhone is an overpriced hunk of under achieved hardware (no memory expansion, no replaceable battery. I could go on and on..) Everyone says “wait till v2 comes out blah blah blah” you think when iPhone v2 comes out everyone else will just stop making phones? Besides Apple won’t learn from its mistake and will bring iPhone v2 into the market as overpriced as the first iPhone was.
Sprint has their own phone updater that you can use without plugging it into a pc.. and thank god you dont have to own a mac to use sprint phones to their full capacity like with iPhone.
no memory … no replaceable battery … that didn’t stop iPod from taking over the mobile music devices market. be objective, don’t just bash the iPhone because you don’t like Apple. Consumers decide the better product … not you alone.
Does anyone know why our country is run by an illiterate pasty monkey? It’s because of those same consumers you so admirably mentioned. Iphone didn’t have all the features because they knew exactly how to grab hold of the “consumer” mentality, “Ooooo… pretty” A friendly UI is what the masses need. Just because you use a Mac or have an Iphone does not elevate your intellect. In fact it means that you were most likely spending most of your time on the phone with Help Desk wondering if you needed to register your registry. Sprint service is great, they’ve mastered the mobile phone necessities in order to provide a true cellular experience. Apple is the yech genius that brings brilliance and ingenuity to everything they create, but I’ll be damned if I get on my knees just because something “looks pretty”… please stop being consumers
you know…the funny thing is that i used to work for BOTH sprint and at&t…if only you guys knew what goes on behind closed doors. the only thing i am allowed to say is that for those of you who are with Sprint right now…STAY WITH THEM. you will be amazed at the *cough* mergers *cough* that are coming up…not to mention the new HTC Raphael exclusive to sprint…which WILL destroy the iphone, v1 &v2
Hilarious! Thanks for that. I have nothing against the iphone but I really like the plans that Sprint provides. My nights start at 7:00 pm – instead of 9!!! Why can’t ATT&T do that? Then we would be talking competition. Let’s face it, a lot of us come out at work, relax and are ready to call/chat around 6 or 7 ish….instead with ATT&T, you have to wait until 9:00!!!!

What’s all this bashing on the I-phone and AT&T? In case you guys haven’t noticed the Iphone’s almost a year old. Technology advances over a year and there is more stuff you can do. So, of course the Instinct is better, it’s “newer”, but when the new I-phone comes out it’s going to kill the Instinct.
First of all….Sprint will never make a Product better then APPLE….better yet pay to have a product made better. hardware might be made by samsung but sprint gave them the specs on what to put and what not to put I bet if that new samung was coming to GSM it would be wayyyyyy better..oh by the way HTC makes way better phones for GSM then they do CDMA and I just love the unlocking world as the US is always stripped of great phones. I wonder what sprints poor network is going to be like when VZW goes GSM FOR THE LTE network Sprint might have fast data but whats the point of fast data? if and when you loose service…atleast with the iphone it comes with WIFI how do you not include wifi??? that is pretty much standard now a days…..if the new samsung fails it will be sprint fault as the iphone does way more business wize among other things over the sprint phone hands down. I don’t think i wanna spend $300 for a phone that just has high speed data with no great OS to run like MAC OS X…..hell you can even do alot with the windows mobile over that samsung os. the iphone is more like a computer/ipod/phone all in 1 and you can’t be that.
christ… the phone is made by SAMSUNG!!!
First of all GSM is not better then CDMA…GSM was the first cell phone standard which is analog/digital and that is why it is in more places then CDMA…Sooner or later when AT&T catch up and get off there slow 2G network they will slowly migrate to Digital everywhere…but until then sprint has them beat on that market. And then you say what is the point of fast data…HELLO!!!…Fast data equals texting while talking on the phone, faster web page load…and no need for wifi like you say…The only reason they put wifi in the iphone is because AT&T’s crappy service wont let you go to itunes on there web or view web pages at broadband like speeds…Who wants to find a place that has wifi just to get on the internet…Why net get REV A speeds no matter where you are with SPRINT. I agree that the instinct doesnt have the robust software and OS of the iphone but at least they are trying…And on top of that it is competition for the iphone!
I like the looks of the Iphone, not the carrier and plans. But for business the biggest problem the Iphone faces is that it does NOT have push email technology like the ActiveSync or blackberry enterprise, which means that you are connected live to enterprise mail severs like Blackberry, Palm Treo’s, and many others phones do. This means that your contacts, calendar and email from your workplace outlook on exchnage server get automatically sync to your phone LIVE so there is no need for cradels and other things like that. This is what any BIG business uses on everyday communications, the IPhone is still a geek gadget, the TREO, Blackberrys and soon to come Instinct phones are business oriented phones that do have ActiveSync built into them so that you are connected to your enterprise mail server at all times. By the way you need to have unlimited internet access since it connects in the background at all times.
You have not looked much into Apple’s 3G iPhone and are making assumptions. The Apple 3G does have Microsoft ActiveSync and will update you calender and contacts if your enterprise uses Microsoft Exchange. Be informed. Being presumption just makes you look stupid.
After today, I think the name is really “extinct” rather than instinct. Sorry Extinct, but your already forgotten.
I agree with alot of you by saying we cannot really say that the instinct is better as of now because it has not come out, but to all that is saying Samsung is making a big mistake by going head to head with the iPhone, i don’t think its a big mistake, just a gamble. Samsung knows that the iPhone is considered to be the best phone out right now and if you want to be the best, you have to compete against the best. If they don’t succeed, everyone will say it was expected, but think about what they have accomplished if they do succeed. Either way i will be getting one as soon as they come out since i’m already a sprint customer and it’s time for me to upgrade.

LOL! Right on. All the people praising Instinct have never held one in their hands. All the people defending the iPhone actually have one and have been using one for almost a year now.
Sorry to say peoples but i am the owner of the 16g iphone and i tested side by side wit that video about internet speed and hate to burst yalls bubbles. But i was able to get to the sprint site and then go directly to there instinct page by the time the instinct was a 50% page loading….If u notice they have the iphone running on edge. Which is a program designed by apple tht can get an internet connection anywhere! May not be the fastest but its connection. And the instinct in the video is running inside of a sprint store. Using a wi-fi also the gps is not tht great but i did not see anywhere in there ad about mapquest. Which the iphone has. The iphone that i have will sadly be out dated in june but none the less it beat the Brand new Instinct….idk the term that well but doesnt that mean that the iphone is still one step ahead of sprint?? LOl none the less i would love to watch sum1 compete wit the all mighty company….APPLE!
wow guys. the iphone v2 is still lackin so… many things
the instinct is going to be a better phone and the most wanted phone. the iphone is old news
So do you still have the Samsung MP3 player or an iPod?
i work at sprint the instinct is awesome (<<< is that spelled right) ha ha anyway i cant wait to own it. apple has just got bite by the instinct hands down
Its actually spelt: “In Stinked”
LOL.. yes we’ll take the word from someone who works for Sprint. Unlike Mossberg or Pogue or many others who clearly states that the touchscreen is nothing advanced. It works just like your supermarket touchscreen or ATM screen. Slow, inconsistent interface. Small screen. I guess they think slapping on feature after feature after feature they win? Uh no, what good is it, when the feature works and looks like junk.
slappy, these folks go with Sprint for their plans and that’s a valid arguement … while some do most wish Sprint sold the iPhone as well and is bashing it because … well … sour grapes.
Thanks for the comments. Several of you hit the nail on the head. Sprint’s calling plan is the best. I want GPS and a calendar (and an easy to-do list please). I don’t think that is worth AT&T’s calling plan. Looking at the AT&T website, I can’t figure out how much my bill would be. I did want to use Mobile Me. But not for $50 more a month on my cell phone bill.
My AT&T bill including the iPhone data plan never exceeds $65/month. Atleast I’m not paying $99 when I don’t have to.
i just got the instint phone I’m a Sprint customer and wont change to att because their plans and coverage sucks more then the sprint phones do. The instinct phone SUCKS for business use its worthless, it does not have Activesync which means you cant push contacts, calendat, email, and tasks to your phone – Plus it does not open any kind of attachments like Excel, Word, Pdf’s etc. the only thing you can get email. It does play very cool TV, music sound is ok, and GPS is very good. other then that there is nothing else this phone does. I”m taking the phone back and waiting for a better phone from Sprint because this one lacks majorly, the new Iphone is going to definetely be much better because it can do all the functions of this and all the functions of bsuiness apps.
I work for At&t and the Instinct should never be compared to an Iphone it’s like comparing a child to an adult the Instinct has soo much to learn. As far as Sprint having faster data speeds than At&t lol please do your reseach on our 3G Network prior to making any statements. By the way I hope you guys dont believe all the Instint HYPE!! & make it to an At&t store on July 11th when The Truth is released aka IPHONE 2.

I’m sorry, the iphone just looks and is way better – the instinct seems like just a phony copy.
I like how all these companies, LG, Samsung, etc. to name a few are trying to copy the greatest phone ever built. why don’t these companies develop their own version, without copying the iPhone’s blueprints! ! Apple will always lead, everyone else just follow! ! !
What they can’t copy is the OS, SDK and the apps coming from the apps store. I’ve seen some applications that are coming up, and I have to say, they are just going to blow away the pre-conception of what smartphone can and cannot do. Basically what Apple has done is made a killer device where developers can create just about anything they want. For the user, Apple approve apps means, quality, stability and awesome user experience for the user.
Let me say this, I have the sprint everything plan on an instinct and i have a att unlimited plan on an iphone (version 1 of course). The instinct is not a better phone then the iphone and it is no worse. Sprint has a killer price plan that att cannot match and att has a killer phone but it lacks very simple features that are needed (mms or video for instance). Stop all the bickering, you like the iPhone he likes the Instinct and I like them both. I am an apple fan to the bone but samsung did not make a bad phone here and in many cases a better phone then my iphone v1 and the iphone v2?… that is a sad upgrade list for apple … come on steve we all wanted better! It was said when the iphone came out and it holds true today “Apple’s iPhone will not be the best phone ever, but it will change the phone industry forever”.
Way to go on that apple, they did change the industry and now phones as good as the iphone and I am sure better then the iPhone have an will keep showing up, everyone has learned what the people want by looking through apple’s eyes so sit back and enjoy the neat new phones we will see in the years to come … Can you say Garmin Nuvi Phone?
I totally agree. I just bought the instict and have friends with the iphone and I too am an Apple fan but the instict is a deal. I paid $125.00; why should I pay $400, or now $200 and switch carriers? AT&T cannot compete with the Sprint plan! I have a friend who rushed to get rid of his old iphone and sold it so he could get the new iphone; when he found out that he would have to pay more on the AT&T plan; he decided to get a Nokia (UGLY PHONE!!!!) which he claims is the best. He basically messed himself up (never will admit it) but that’s what Apple does to people; they creat all this hype and people dump their “old” stuff for the new and improved; as for my friend, I know for a fact that he regrets making this move. If only the Iphone was sold with Sprint; I would get it; until then, I will remain a loyal Sprint customer.
I’ve been with Sprint for a long time now and didn’t even know the definition of what “dropped call” was until that one series of commercials from Cingular (ATT) came out where they mute the sound for one person in the conversation and it’s all awkward. Whenever I use my friend’s iPhone to call someone I notice a big difference in connection quality. iPhone 2.0 is cool (especially because I can sync it with Exchange, which is a must-have for me), but I don’t know if I can sacrifice the coverage and signal quality to have one.
I think that if not Instinct, then the new HTC phones will be a really good competition/alternative to the iPhone come fall. Anyone know if there is an SDK for the Instinct so that someone can write an ActiveSync equivalent application? If so, forget ATT and iPhone.
Oh yeah, and GPS feature on the Instinct is taaaaaaight.
The hardware features can only go so far. It’s the software that makes a difference. For example, recall the market share between PCs and MACs in the 90s. Why did people use PCs over MACs? I think it’s highly attributed to the fact that the number of PC software was significantly greater than the one of MAC software.
The iPhone SDK is free/public while the Samsung one is private. The public SDK allows people to develop software outside of a company; people develop software for free for the general public as there are open source projects such as Linux being one of the biggest and very well known ones.
For example, even if you have the GPS functionality built into a device it would only serve as a normal GPS device for navigational purposes. With the public SDK, anyone can develop apps that utilizes GPS functionality such as find-my-friend, find-a-taxi-buddy, etc.
Having said that, the chance of any product without the SDK succeeding in this type of market is very slim. Apple is simply taking advantage of the general public’s will to do “cool” things when given a chance.
When you see “cool” apps only being supported on the iPhone, people would buy the iPhone regardless of the relatively expensive AT&T plan; because, the apps alone make the hefty cost worth paying the extra.
This is NOT TRUE. Apple charges a developer $100 for SDK to build applications but Sprint is offering the Samsung Instinct SDK and phone emulator to developers for FREE to build third party applications. If you want, you can download it here and build your own all for free if you know the popular Java programming language:
http://developer.sprint.com/instinct
Apple doesn’t charge for the SDK; the charge for you to join their Developer network. You can download and develop with the SDK for free.
NOT TRUE. iPhone SDK costs $100 while Sprint Instinct SDk is free. You can download it here to build your own third party applications for Sprint Instinct:
http://developer.sprint.com/instinct
Iphone is a good phone. Instinct is too. But HTC phones that use windows mobile can do everything both of those phones do and more. All the roms and applications for both of those phones are on my HTC Mogul right now. HTC been making touchscreen phones before apple made the ipod. Check out xda-developers and you all will see all the applications on the iphone and the instinct are on the website and can be downloaded to all HTC products.
This is more of a question about iphone. I like what I see and contiplating purchasing one when they come out. I have a Palm 700 and I use the Palm desktop religiously for appointments and contacts. Is there anyway of downloading what I have from my Palm to the iphone? The people at AT&T are not very helpful and won’t take the necessary steps to find out.
It is simple. THE IN INSTINCT is a better phone. Why? here is way after 1 year using the iphone I know this: Apple don”t care about us…they keep adding stuff to their iphone,,things that are alreedy out…like the GPS and why? to keep charging one way or the other to people…and that alone is not fear.
After being a user of the iphone for a year, is time to be real and see where you can get the better plans, prices, and future….
This is for all the user of iphone go and see how much money you will spent on the IPHONE AND PLANS after that, JUMP and TNX God for the sprint INSTINCT.
WOW — after reading all this I am now even more confused…I have been waiting for an Iphone for 2 months and now that the time is here what do you think I did – I went out and bought an instinct — I can tell you that I am no techie… I can hold my own in a very small way BUT — BUT I did have a method to my madness.,.. I have been with sprint 7-8 years and want to make sure I am being practicle before footing the 145 a month bill for the iphone with ATT and the 300 bucks VS. 129 I paid for the instint — I can try this instinct out for the next 2 weeks and decide if I like it – if I am not sure then return it and completely reverse the contract—- I just dont think the phone compares for what I want to do with it, I want to use the web and it seems like its not opening or browsing like a full sized web page — its just not wirking proper for me also I am having trouble with my email already not working properly, I think manipulating the screens are much harder than the iphone ( i have played with iphone for countelss hours at the apple store and ATT store)… also alot of backing out of pages and button pushing with insticnt..,. plus it shuts off every minute and you have to physically push the button on top to turn it back on. – also the mini sd card is onlyup to 8 mb and its extra where as the iphone has 16 mb built in… also the screen is not as fluid in my opinion as the iphone…. also the pages not as bright and the screen size is smaller – which is a negative for me as I have them aging eyes starting… iphone will have a docking station for the car availbale (I think — they did for the 1st gen) and I like the idea of the phone sitting up high in a docking station while I drive so I dont have to look too far away from the road if need be to answer a call..
now the instinct has live TV, video and sprint is offering a hell of a deal for the plan…. but is the money you save on the plan worth the differnces above….I live 4 miles off the main road – I am worried about reception and dropped calls and no service with ATT — I mean everyone says that ATT stinks — i thought they werepioneers in the phone field — why so much negative remarks about their service
PLEASE ANYONE HELP ME DECIDE…. this is a huge deal for me as I am contenplating getting rid of my home phone and allowing this new venture to be the main phone in my life… I love that I can have email and web at all times — in my opinion it takes the place of a bulky laptop — I think Iphone may win out this one but from a leymans term point of view can anyone shed some light for me…..I have 11 days to figure this out and i need help
Thanks Francine
I am sorry I worte such a huge post above — I just need some practicle advice form you more experienced people out there.. I welcome any input and advice
iphone. period.
do any of you who bash the iphone have a mac?
apple makes extraordinary products that are worth the money.
you may pay more money, but their products do not disappoint.
mac over pc any day – iphone over instinct everyday.
and i don’t even have an iphone. =)
Good point. The build quality of Apple products are a cut above the rest. From there the quality follows right down to the code that runs the devices. When you move icons, scroll, pinch, expand, double tap… its all smooth, superb quality.
I can appreciate everyone having their position, but I still have had my questioned answered regarding downloading info.I have a Palm 700 and I use the Palm desktop religiously for appointments and contacts. Is there anyway of downloading what I have from my Palm to the iphone or even the instinct? The people at AT&T are not very helpful and won’t take the necessary steps to find out.
The reason I went with Sprint Instinct Touch screen phone is because UNLIMITED Text messaging is included. So with 2 lines, it saves a ton of money over EXPENSIVE AT&T ripoff plan.
Think about it, text messages take tiny amount of data but AT&T charges enormous amount of money for them because they can!
No they can’t. Go with Sprint Instinct.
You also get UNLIMITED TV channels (live and on-demand) and Radio and turn-by-turn voice GPS Navigation with real street names announced. And it also has a camcorder that iPhone 3G doesn’t! And it is perfect size and fits so well in your hands! The browser on iPhone is better however.
But over $30 per month EXTRA for text messaging for 2 lines on AT&T? That’s a ripoff right there! Not for me! And I can get my work push-email (Outlook/Exchange) for FREE with Sprint. Apple would charge $100 per year for the service. Those fees add-up quickly with iPhone 3G!
Bottom line:
============
iPhone 3G = Good; AT&T = Rip-off!
Go with Sprint Instinct if you live in major metropolitan area! Sprint has much better 3G coverage anyway but there is no wi-fi on Instinct phone.
Plan Comparison:
===============
Sprint Instinct:
—————
2 lines, 1500 minutes talk time, unlimited data, UNLIMITED text messaging, unlimited TV (live TV and on-demand channels), unlimited streaming radio, unlimited Turn-by-turn Voice command GPS Navigation with real street name announcement, push email from Outlook/Exchange: $129.99 per month
AT&T iPhone 3G:
—————
2 lines, 1400 minutes talk time, unlimited data, Unlimited text messaging ($30 EXTRA), no TV, AOL radio, Google maps with GPS, Mobile me email ($100 per year to Apple): $149.99 + $30 = $179.99 per month + ($100 per year for mobileme push email!)
This was a no brainer for me as much as I wanted iPhone 3G.

thank you so much for that breakdown MIKE — I have been struggling with what to do about the iphone but couldnot get past the RIP OFF plan from ATT — I can afford it and the new version of iphone coming out but it was principle — I am thinking to stay with this instinct –I have 2.5 weeks more to decide and still be able to have the plan reversed but there are a few things I am still not sure of — I am not sure i like the smaller screen on the instinct and the camera is not as clear at ll…how are you manageing with these things???
Thanks and your reveie/post above was great ATT equals RIP OFF and apple did themselves a diservice by making their product exclusive presently…
Mike,
I’m not attacking you and I am sure your are a fine person but I think that your comparison is misleading, you posted this:
AT&T iPhone 3G:
—————
2 lines, 1400 minutes talk time, unlimited data, Unlimited text messaging ($30 EXTRA), no TV, AOL radio, Google maps with GPS, Mobile me email ($100 per year to Apple): $149.99 + $30 = $179.99 per month + ($100 per year for mobileme push email!)
First off as for TV it will have TV, even live TV, Apple’s iPhone is an open system and thus will launch with over 4000 applications for entertainment and productivity. Can you run a sling box off of the instinct or play PS2 quality games?
The email is optional you can use any email service out there including many that are free, like google and aol. True push mail is extra, but the instinct doesn’t offer it.
I admit that the instinct has a few features I wish the iphone had but they are so small i can live with out them, such as haptic.
what about the plan — lets not forget that apple made this exclusive to ATT — I have never heard of a cellplan costing “around” 150 per month and not include text messaging — I mean how dare them — I think Mike is simply saying that you cantr go wrong for the money with this new choice that has become available — ATT does = rip off… sprint = good value…. simply put…. Iphone awesome hardware — but att not getting my money thus far…..
Why does everyone think Apple is so great. I and many other computer science and marketing students have studied all Apple products and the marketinng strategy associated with them. They are good, but most other high end products are better and are priced considerably lower. Apple has the best ads in the computer business. THATS why people buy APPLE not for service or a superior product. Apple computers, for example are just as vulnerable to viruses as any other model on the market, they just have lil apps that make it “cool” but what is a computer really used for, BUSINESS!!! Apples are for college students and lil kids who need the cool factor (how many proffessionals do you see sitting around with i-lap tops??)… Ipods are “cool” but over priced and do the same exact thing that a simliar and a cheaper mp3 player does…its just cool or the new hot item, but not superior by any means. NOW the I phone is a good phone…it has many apps, it has a great interface…its user friendly….it has a couple exclusive features……..BUT its over priced, the features dont add much value to the PHONE (remember its purpose it to inable and expand communication ability..not to be just cool)…the network sucks, and to use a iphone to its full potential you need an Apple computer and a Att plan that gonna be almost $200.00 a month. NOW look at similar phones ie. Sprints INSTINCT its does everything the iphone does, plus more, its cheaper, the netowrk is better, the Sprint plans are better than ATT’s, the internet is faster (inabling communication, not just inhancing coolness), the interface is just as good if not better, AND it looks about the same (cool look lol)… So if you like Apple just say i like to buy phones and devices that are over priced and lacks the most advanced features, and when iPhone v2 comes out ill spend more money to get the phone I should have gotten in the first place. APPLE iPhone is good but when you add in startup cost $250-$400(cost of an iphone), ownership cost (Att’s expensive plans) and the lack of up to date features. You have what everyone else has, an OK phone, but you paid way more for yours…. so someone could say “WoW is that an iPhone?” and you smile and say yeah…. while Steve Jobs says “hell yeah” and laughs all the way to the bank.
and for people that keep spreading lies about Apple being superior. please go take some classes learn how to hack an apple and you will see its just as good as any other similarly priced machine. only reason apple computers dont get viruses as much as pc’s is because way mose people have pc’s the virus spreads faster and wa-la you have a infection. macs are infected just as easily when exposed to a virus. IF you didnt know, now you know!!!!!!!!!! im not a hater but i just want people to be aware and not mislead by people who make up stuff beause the heard it or just like to talk bs. peace to all pc and mac owners. be happy with what ya got cause it will be outdated in 12 months anyway!
LISTEN ALL U PEOPLE WHO KEEP SAING THE INSTINCT STINKS OR THE IPHONE STINKS!!!! My dad has been with sprint since it came out. So he dosent want to switch to ATnT. Does that meen i say the iphone stinks? NO! personaly i think its an awsome phone but the instinct is a better choice for me. And sprint people dont need to TRASH the iphone just because you dont like it or its not on sprint. If you have been with ATnT for a long time then you might not want to switch to sprint, you probably want the iphone. And thats your choice. but does that meen you need to TRASH the instinct? NO!!! LISTEN EVERYONE HAS DIFFRENT OPINIONS. AND MAYBE YOU SHOULD TRY THE INSTINCT IF YOU HAVE THE IPHONE AND SEE WHAT ITS LIKE. ULL NEVER KNOW, MAYBE YOU MIGHT LIKE THE INSTINCT MORE. AND IF YOU HAVE THE INSTINCT WHY DONT YOU TRY THE IPHONE AND SEE WHAT ITS LIKE. ULL NEVER KNOW, MAYBE YOU MIGHT LIKE THE IPHONE MORE!
i can tell from reading your comment you’re a 13 year old girl.
