Instinct vs. iPhone: FIGHT

Sprint is getting ready for the fight of its life with the Samsung Instinct. While I actually like the Instinct, they’re trying to take Stevie head on, which is probably not a good idea. Generally, however, these videos are pretty cute and it’s nice to know CDMA folks can get themselves some iPhone-alikeness… unless the 3G iPhone is CDMA.

Sprint has a long row to hoe here. The Instinct is a strong phone with a great new interface, so I have no problem with it. However, doing a head-to-head against everyone’s favorite big hunk of chrome is going to be rough, especially as reviews come in. At least they’re being funny about it.

Problem is, Samsung is taking aim at a moving target. Come June (or shortly thereafter) Apple will probably announce iPhone v2 (if news reports and speculation is to be believed), and going by Apple’s reputation it will be a substantially improved phone. At that point, the Instinct will probably get blown out of the water.

If the Instinct was being released *now* it might stand some chance, or if they were tryng to position themselves as a cheaper alternative thats as good as the iphone… but if its not coming out until June anyway, going head to head on features is probably not going to pay off.

iPhone will have GPS in June. Game Over.

Paul

Sprint has a better network and the Simply Everything Plan for $99.99 (with fees + taxes it’s $107)… the only thing that it does not include is International roaming so unless I make a lot of calls from outside the US, my bill will never be higher… Game Over…

the iphone will have gps in june and so doesthe instict but it will never have live t.v or recording video

Joe (Who am I?)

Are you willing to put money on that assertion: “Never have live tv”?!?!? You’re forgetting about the iPhones rich SDK which can have anyone making a video recording program from storing camera snap frames.

slappy (Who am I?)

Hate to say it, but the iPhone got blown away by that one.

SDS

Wait until the show a video comparing internet speed. Iphone won’t stand a chance against Rev-A speeds.

Magic (Who am I?)

Don’t know if they were ready for it yet but I was looking online and I came across the video comparing internet connection speeds and the IPhone of course lost!! Can’t beat Rev-A Speeds…

That is bullshit!!!!! the instict is not better than the iPhone!!! The iPhone will soon come with a v2 and it will twice as better!!! No no… wait Im sorry, three times as better than instict!!!

Paul

Verizon’s niche is the best network, AT&T’s niche is the iPhone, Sprint’s niche is the “best calling plan” by a mile. I would rather have the “best calling plan by a mile” and still be able to get comparable hardware… Think of how much you would have to pay with AT&T to have the same service as a Sprint user on the Simply Everything Plan with the Instinct (which is going to retail for under $300)… My bill is $107 including fees + taxes. What would yours be to have unmilinited everything? $150? $160? Maybe more? Let’s be honest, to use the iPhone to it’s full potential you would need and unlimited everything plan… Buying an iPhone on a limited plan is like buying a Ferrari and putting 87 octane gas in it… What’s the point?

Paul, you’re right. Fact is, as an iPhone user (and don’t get me wrong, I LOVE it), I joined AT&T. Howvere, I was switching from Verizon anyway, and all my co-workers were ATT, so I figured what the hell. A few points though:
1. My iPhone is Jailbreaked (www.ziphone.com). This means it’s compatible with Sprint, AT&T, Cingular, pretty much anyone using a SIM card. Further, since I JB’d it prior to activation, they couldn’t get me on their rip-off “iPhone Plan”, meaning I’m paying $109.99/mo, unlimited everything.
2. The SDK for the iPhone has ALREADY produced every feature (GPS, Video Recording, etc.) that the Instinct is boasting about, with the exception of TV. The 3G ver. 2 has these functions native. TV is a hop skip and a jump.
3. This is APPLE people. I’m a Window’s user, first to admit it. I don’t like MacOS. I’m not a fanboy. But, they’ve spent eons working on this damn thing, and released it BIG. The fact that the Instinct is a UI and visual knock-off (which isn’t a bad thing; go with what works) indicates to me that they’re basing it on the iPhone. Not working on it for years, but frantically trying to catch up.

I agree Paul. At least you ahve sense. To those who think teh advantage to Apple is how long they been out with their phone is just another stupid analopy. Why? Sony beat Nintendo and Sega in its first year with the original Playstation. Microsoft is beating Sony with it’s second generation system agaist Sony’s 3rd. In fact Nintendo proved it was best to release a system after another company so you can show how much the previous company is horrible.

Iphone is poular bec it is what it is. But it isn’t better. They simply had no one to compete with. They are using technology that was made by someone else. Palm alreday had touch screen phones. So Apple touch screen is no big deal. They just used prettier icons and ppl went ape over it. The glitz of the package of this overprices itunes player ios what the hype was all about. Most ppl didnt even know what teh iphone could and couldnt do. they simply bought it bec it is a unique looking beautiful phone. n\but as with anything that is pretty outside, once you get it home you find ot what a headache it is to own it. Ask any male moviestar. The Instinct has yet to have software issues. Apple is still fixing Ipod issues whicg is all eth iphone is. Its an IPOD that you can make calls on. I decide i would rather have teh itouch, but when instinct came out, I see i ave teh benefit of all of Apple portable products and more. The ipod phone is a awesome toy, but teh instinct is even more so. The iphone is son’t ps2 and instinct is ms xbox. It isn’t better maybe by name, it is better in what you get.

As another said…to get full use of the iphoe it would cost you $200 permonth and u still wont have all that instinct offers.

fanboy much today?

Magic (Who am I?)

How can you say that until you see the instinct…No one will now how good or bad this phone will be until it comes out and we can compare it ourselves. I think taking it head on with the iphone was a bad idea…I know they want to be as good as the iphone but it has been out longer then the instinct has obviously. The first version of the instinct may not compare to the first or second version of the iphone but maybe over time they will both offer the same things.

Derrick (Who am I?)

Like most other have state you cant compare the two especial with apple getting ready to launch v2 of the iphone i myself want to get an iphone but glad that i did not. like most new phones there is always something wrong with the 1st one. So for the instinct it has a way to go all it did was add what the iphone was missing and take what the iphone already had. The iphone was the eye opener for most providers and now they are all trying to beat it and each phone will only get better and better than the other.

James (Who am I?)

I’ve was one of the impatient bleeding edge types that got the iPhone when it first came out. The only disappointing thing to me was the price-drop. The phone itself performed remarkably well for a first run. Apple just skimped on what I would call basic mobile phone features: voice reck, picture mail, video, etc. That’s what pissed me off. I think the advantage Instinct has is that it had a chance to hear what iPhone users have been complaining about. They can address those issues before their product launch.

Derrick (Who am I?)

ok

Nick (Who am I?)

Lets say it’s not any better than the new iPhone … but cheaper phone and way cheaper to use … do your math!! Apple doesn’t pay my bills … I DO!!

no image
Joe (Who am I?)

iPhone 3G - $199 (8GB), $299 (16GB) You can still pay you bills. How many GB storage does the instink have?

be realistic

Dude, realistically this bullshit is like taking a souped up honda and trying to race against a dodge viper or something. Sprints plans are great don’t get me wrong, and i have a sprint device ( my company is a sprint reseller) but for folks who have an apple computer ( and the growing masses that are shifting to apple) the i phone is a quick and viable solution. Not to mention the user interface on the i phone is great, along with wifi, along with a plethora of new applications available for the i phone, along with voip skype calls with wifi… Point blank this is only release 1 of the i phone. Wait till release 2 happens with all the extra perks that the instinct boasts about. Then what. Then apple will release some type of dual screen flip i phone with video conferencing available. Ill prob get the instinct when it drops, and i will still use my i pod nano right next to it in my other pocket. Y ? because everyone and their mom has i tunes a d i have music on my shit form all over east bumfuck and everyones itunes. It is what it is bitches

Paul

Why didn’t Apple just offer all of these bells and whistles with the first run? GPS navigation technology was out there when the first run of the iPhone came out. They do it this way because they want you to drop $500 on a new phone every 6 months… I don’t know, I guess my issue is not with the iPhone itself but with it’s carrier. If Sprint offered the iPhone, I would probably already have it. For me personally, the service carry’s more weight to me than the device. If the carrier sucks then the device automatically loses some value… I can talk on my phone 10 hours a day or I can send 10,000 text mesages or I can use 10 GB on web browsing/e-mail or I can be roaming in Alaska and I know my bill will never exceed $99.99… I also like that one of your points was about using Skype on the iPhone (their only free service is Skype to Skype calling). Why the hell would I pay for another phone line when I am on the simply everything plan and have unlimited minutes? I actually used to pay for a VOIP line as a second phone (so I could keep my cell minutes down) before the simply everything plan came out. Maybe 6 months from now another carrier will offer a similar calling plan to Sprint’s, but until they do Sprint has the upper hand…

James (Who am I?)

I am all about the Apple products and carry an iPhone. However, I welcome the Samsung Instinct because it’s going to keep Apple on their toes in terms of feature-set and pricing. I was pretty disappointed going from my $100 mobile phone to a $400 iPhone that didn’t support picture mail or voice recognition. Competition is healthy because it keeps us consumers from getting stuck with crappy products. There are no other touch-phones in the US market, so you are stuck with Apple. Hell, I may even defect if the iPhone 2.0 release doesn’t contain picture mail!

jay

i think paul is a freaking genius and a great advocate for the samsung instinct. screw the iPhone its so overrated my grandma has one. get over it. out with the old and in with the new

Jon

I’ll have to agree with analyzing the plans. I switched to Sprint because of their unlimited plan and I used to hate them because of their customer service and mysterious added fees from when I had them 4 years ago, but they came a long way. I have a Pearl now and could care less for the iPhone. The lack of basic features on such a high priced phone that requires such a high price plan is ridiculous and redundant. iTunes? Are you serious? There are WAY more ways to buy music, even Sprint has their own Music store so who cares about iTunes. As far as synchronizing, files can be backed up on the SD card and there are programs adaptable to OS X. For the features, the technology, the productivity, the re-occuring bills, the price of the phone, removable battery (and two of them!), you name it, I’ll go with the Instinct anyday…..that is unless Apple is willing to drop the price AND add ALL those features to the iPhone 2, and ATT drop their plan to match Sprint’s. Yeah, how likely is THAT to happen

haha (Who am I?)

you guys that think the instict is going to be beter you will sadly be mistaken one things you guys dont seem to realize is that the iphone runs on an operating system … do you know what that means … it means that just by connecting it to your computer you can get updates new features and enhancements … that is the wonderful thing about Apple they are always looking to make them better. so yea from the looks of it the iphone v2 maybe on the way but even the v1 has this capability so all around the iphone is and will always be the best. lets see sprint try to handle something that they know nothing about … Apple specializes in computers and technology .. its a no brainer

no image
Krunk (Who am I?)

Apple specializes in BS and propaganda and competition bashing. iPhone is an overpriced hunk of under achieved hardware (no memory expansion, no replaceable battery. I could go on and on..) Everyone says “wait till v2 comes out blah blah blah” you think when iPhone v2 comes out everyone else will just stop making phones? Besides Apple won’t learn from its mistake and will bring iPhone v2 into the market as overpriced as the first iPhone was.
Sprint has their own phone updater that you can use without plugging it into a pc.. and thank god you dont have to own a mac to use sprint phones to their full capacity like with iPhone.

no image
Joe (Who am I?)

no memory … no replaceable battery … that didn’t stop iPod from taking over the mobile music devices market. be objective, don’t just bash the iPhone because you don’t like Apple. Consumers decide the better product … not you alone.

no image
jeez (Who am I?)

Does anyone know why our country is run by an illiterate pasty monkey? It’s because of those same consumers you so admirably mentioned. Iphone didn’t have all the features because they knew exactly how to grab hold of the “consumer” mentality, “Ooooo… pretty” A friendly UI is what the masses need. Just because you use a Mac or have an Iphone does not elevate your intellect. In fact it means that you were most likely spending most of your time on the phone with Help Desk wondering if you needed to register your registry. Sprint service is great, they’ve mastered the mobile phone necessities in order to provide a true cellular experience. Apple is the yech genius that brings brilliance and ingenuity to everything they create, but I’ll be damned if I get on my knees just because something “looks pretty”… please stop being consumers

Atropos (Who am I?)

you know…the funny thing is that i used to work for BOTH sprint and at&t…if only you guys knew what goes on behind closed doors. the only thing i am allowed to say is that for those of you who are with Sprint right now…STAY WITH THEM. you will be amazed at the *cough* mergers *cough* that are coming up…not to mention the new HTC Raphael exclusive to sprint…which WILL destroy the iphone, v1 &v2

Dani (Who am I?)

Hilarious! Thanks for that. I have nothing against the iphone but I really like the plans that Sprint provides. My nights start at 7:00 pm - instead of 9!!! Why can’t ATT&T do that? Then we would be talking competition. Let’s face it, a lot of us come out at work, relax and are ready to call/chat around 6 or 7 ish….instead with ATT&T, you have to wait until 9:00!!!!

What’s all this bashing on the I-phone and AT&T? In case you guys haven’t noticed the Iphone’s almost a year old. Technology advances over a year and there is more stuff you can do. So, of course the Instinct is better, it’s “newer”, but when the new I-phone comes out it’s going to kill the Instinct.

First of all….Sprint will never make a Product better then APPLE….better yet pay to have a product made better. hardware might be made by samsung but sprint gave them the specs on what to put and what not to put I bet if that new samung was coming to GSM it would be wayyyyyy better..oh by the way HTC makes way better phones for GSM then they do CDMA and I just love the unlocking world as the US is always stripped of great phones. I wonder what sprints poor network is going to be like when VZW goes GSM FOR THE LTE network Sprint might have fast data but whats the point of fast data? if and when you loose service…atleast with the iphone it comes with WIFI how do you not include wifi??? that is pretty much standard now a days…..if the new samsung fails it will be sprint fault as the iphone does way more business wize among other things over the sprint phone hands down. I don’t think i wanna spend $300 for a phone that just has high speed data with no great OS to run like MAC OS X…..hell you can even do alot with the windows mobile over that samsung os. the iphone is more like a computer/ipod/phone all in 1 and you can’t be that.

no image
jeez (Who am I?)

christ… the phone is made by SAMSUNG!!!

no image
Magic (Who am I?)

First of all GSM is not better then CDMA…GSM was the first cell phone standard which is analog/digital and that is why it is in more places then CDMA…Sooner or later when AT&T catch up and get off there slow 2G network they will slowly migrate to Digital everywhere…but until then sprint has them beat on that market. And then you say what is the point of fast data…HELLO!!!…Fast data equals texting while talking on the phone, faster web page load…and no need for wifi like you say…The only reason they put wifi in the iphone is because AT&T’s crappy service wont let you go to itunes on there web or view web pages at broadband like speeds…Who wants to find a place that has wifi just to get on the internet…Why net get REV A speeds no matter where you are with SPRINT. I agree that the instinct doesnt have the robust software and OS of the iphone but at least they are trying…And on top of that it is competition for the iphone!

JR (Who am I?)

I like the looks of the Iphone, not the carrier and plans. But for business the biggest problem the Iphone faces is that it does NOT have push email technology like the ActiveSync or blackberry enterprise, which means that you are connected live to enterprise mail severs like Blackberry, Palm Treo’s, and many others phones do. This means that your contacts, calendar and email from your workplace outlook on exchnage server get automatically sync to your phone LIVE so there is no need for cradels and other things like that. This is what any BIG business uses on everyday communications, the IPhone is still a geek gadget, the TREO, Blackberrys and soon to come Instinct phones are business oriented phones that do have ActiveSync built into them so that you are connected to your enterprise mail server at all times. By the way you need to have unlimited internet access since it connects in the background at all times.

no image
Joe (Who am I?)

You have not looked much into Apple’s 3G iPhone and are making assumptions. The Apple 3G does have Microsoft ActiveSync and will update you calender and contacts if your enterprise uses Microsoft Exchange. Be informed. Being presumption just makes you look stupid.

I agree with alot of you by saying we cannot really say that the instinct is better as of now because it has not come out, but to all that is saying Samsung is making a big mistake by going head to head with the iPhone, i don’t think its a big mistake, just a gamble. Samsung knows that the iPhone is considered to be the best phone out right now and if you want to be the best, you have to compete against the best. If they don’t succeed, everyone will say it was expected, but think about what they have accomplished if they do succeed. Either way i will be getting one as soon as they come out since i’m already a sprint customer and it’s time for me to upgrade.

Sorry to say peoples but i am the owner of the 16g iphone and i tested side by side wit that video about internet speed and hate to burst yalls bubbles. But i was able to get to the sprint site and then go directly to there instinct page by the time the instinct was a 50% page loading….If u notice they have the iphone running on edge. Which is a program designed by apple tht can get an internet connection anywhere! May not be the fastest but its connection. And the instinct in the video is running inside of a sprint store. Using a wi-fi also the gps is not tht great but i did not see anywhere in there ad about mapquest. Which the iphone has. The iphone that i have will sadly be out dated in june but none the less it beat the Brand new Instinct….idk the term that well but doesnt that mean that the iphone is still one step ahead of sprint?? LOl none the less i would love to watch sum1 compete wit the all mighty company….APPLE!
