Apparently those of you who’ve been waiting for the PC version of the popular console game Mass Effect will have to make sure your DSL bill is paid up, as the game requires an online connection even for the single player mode. Why’s this?
Because the game will phone home every 10 days [scroll down three posts] to make sure you haven’t shared your activation key or are using a cracked copy of the game, that’s why.
This is an awful form of DRM that’s uncalled for. It’s bad enough that EA doesn’t trust its customers when they activate their games, but the fact that they keep checking on you stinks of hubris.
I’m not a PC gamer, but if I were, this kind of crap would make me want to buy an Xbox.

I’m not too worried about it. *someone* will most likely crack it or find another way around it. Still, this is a dumb move on their behalf.
Stupidest move ever! Pirated copies will simply remove the check, just like they always do.
Only legit users will be effected by this BS.
That is officially the crappest thing that any gaming company has done in history!
So in the end, we have a game that will be cracked, so it won’t call anyone and all the non-buyers will be able to play without any drama, yet those who buy the game will be treated as if they stole it. Great work EA!
The EA legends behind this kind of DRM need to brought out, beaten, then every 10 days, brought out again, and beaten again. Why? Because I don’t trust that they’ve been beaten properly.
