Man arrested in Dallas for not hanging up mobile phone on flight

Though we agree it’s a needless rule, it’s one we appreciate: you have to hang up your cellphone on flights. We think the idea that the call can interfere with the airplane and do things like make the wings fall off is crap, but we don’t want to be stuck in an 80-foot long metal tube seven miles in the air while having to listen to anyone jabber on to their wife.

Joe David Jones was cited for disorderly conduct for not hanging up on a Southwest flight. In fact, when instructed, he told the staff to kiss his ass. So when the plane landed in Dallas he was met by police. No word on if he was drunk or just a jerk, but we’re guessing the latter.

Hang up and fly, people. Don’t be this guy.

me (Who am I?)

~4 years ago, I was using my Treo 600 to listen to MP3’s on a plane (with wireless mode ‘Off’), and the loudspeaker notified us that there was interference with the plane’s electronics, and the attendant b*itched me out. It seemed to stop when I shut it off. This wasn’t even during landing/takeoff. The phone must have fried my brain too.

There are two sides to every story. Whatever the guy actually said it was likely in direct proportion to some nasty, sullen, reactive, and in-your-face provocation from the Southwest Airlines employee(s). They used to be so much fun and now they’re just so self-righteous.
