Mystery solved: AT&T’s iPhone Wi-Fi is coming, but not ready yet

We received this internal memo to AT&T employees describing a failed launch today of AT&T’s WiFi service. From the memo:

“The iPhone Wi-Fi offer that was scheduled to launch today has been canceled. Nothing has been announced by the company to our customers and will not impact existing customers. Additional communication will be provided if the status the project changes.”

This appears to be the same service we spotted at Starbucks ten days ago. This could be a move to make pre-3G iPhone users feel less left out in the bandwidth department, but also let’s hope they have a strong upgrade path for existing users.

  • I admit it, I dont know much about how the Edge & 3G networks are different however…in this article it appears from the wording that the 3G iphone wont work or wont need to work on wi-fi? The article makes it sound like the Edge/Wi-fi iphone will utilize this new AT&T newtork but the 3G iphone wont have to.

Am I right, wrong? I just want to get it clarified because I plan to purchase the 3G iphone when it hits.

  • gee, I wonder whether all the discussion of spoofing the Referer header to pwn free laptop wifi has anything to do with this.

@Jason: there are plenty of Starbucks stores, and AT&T wifi installations, in places that don’t have 3G and probably never will.
