In short the answer is YES and NO here's why. The drobo is a great means of being a stand alone unit when combined with the *DROBOSHARE*, Just give it power and ethernet and its up. However that's not the case with Home server. It requires a user name and password there are windows updates involved, it's not stand alone because it has more components that make it function as a PC than an actual NAS device. But my theory is if you use homeserver in conjunction with the Drobo / DroboShare then you should be in very good hands. You will have windows functionality as well as a Dedicated Network Device that interacts with the Home server for the maximum results. I am still in the process of getting a homeserver setup. 1st is getting the drobo share.

To get $50 off, go to www.drobostore.com and enter ACNCHE into the coupon code field. Make sure to click "update changes" so that the discount is reflected in the price.

You will get $50 off of Drobo with Firewire (as well as the Drobo with Firewire 2 or 4TB bundles).

I just returned my Drobo after it lost 1.2TB of video files. (I bought it from local store). It's a great idea, but after two weeks the unit gave an error message in drobo dashboard on start-up, saying it could not repair the drobo drive. The dashboard then showed that the drive was completely empty, whereas the drive itself (which was still appearing on the desktop) had a small fraction of the files it should have had.

I spoke to Drobo who suggested I use Disk Warrior to check the drive (a $99 dollar program), I have a copy so used it and the resulting diagnosis was that the Drobo unit is faulty. I was then told to mail it to Germany (I am in the UK) and they would send another one which may, or may not, be able to read the hard drives created by the first one, depending if the first one trashed them. At this point I cut my losses and returned it to the store where I bought it before the 30 day money back guarantee ran out. I really wanted this peice of kit to work but unfortunately it looks like it needs more work before prime time. If you buy it don't rely on it.

My roomate and I went halfers on a Drobo several months ago, and it's fantastic. I don't have time to mess around with RAID configurations, and I enjoy buying whatever the best 'bang for the buck' hard drive is currently, and then easily sliding it in while Drobo is still powered up and mounted, and instantly getting access to the new space. We currently have 3x750GB drives in there, and I'm surprised how quiet it is, I was prepared for the worst.

Anyway, no problems so far, I highly recommend this baby. The one caveat to me though, is what happens if Drobo itself dies, but the drives are fine? The company says you can put your drives in a new Drobo (with the power off, otherwise it will format them of course), and it will read them perfectly. That's great, but, am I really going to want a new Drobo if this one dies? Why reward them for their faulty gear? Well, hopefully this doesn't come up.

That said, I was able to split the cost...if I was buying one for myself full price, then I'd have to reconsider for sure. But, you also have to take into account the money you'll save by only adding drives when you need more space (or replacement). Soon enough, buying a 1TB will cost the same as a 500GB does now. Not many drive enclosures can offer that angle...as opposed to buying a whole other external drive or whatever.

Can't wait to see what the folks at Drobo come up with next. After having 3 drives/enclosures die on me last year, I vowed Never Again! So far, so good. But yeah, if they drop the price someday, count me in for a second one.

Devin,

I'll give you ease of use (unless you set it up for your parents then it's easy), but for security I don't think it's so cut and dry. WHS doesn't automatically mirror everything, you have to designate a folder to "mirrored" but this also let's you backup only the important stuff you want to make sure you don't lose. I know I have tons of digital media I wouldn't miss if I lost. And WHS does pool all the HDs installed together so it also shuffles the data.

Yeah, fair enough points on both sides. I personally would rather do my own, but for my mom or dad, this kind of space is totally sufficient and the backup thing would be comforting for them. The price is a sticking point for some... like I said, people with a little too much money are the target market!

Sure, but that is defiantly better than a standard RAID1, where you would only get less than 2TB of space to use. ;) And anyway, in my opinion, 1.3TB lost space due to backup is better than 1TB of data you could loose, and then another 1TB, and then another, until all drives are dead! ;) Unless your using the drives for data you wouldn't care one bit if it went missing.....but even a pirate who has filled the drive with movies and music he didn't pay for wouldn't be too pleased if 1TB of it got lost...never mind something actually important to you.

The thing which is holding me back from a Drobo is the price, it isn't too bad, but I can build my own NAS for less.

I was very VERY tempted to get one of these (possible without the add-on) but the fact that (for example) if I put in 4 terebyte drives into it, I only get 2.7 TB to play with, which seems a bit of a waste to me.

A fair question. I haven't tried the HP, but I'd say that HP has Drobo beat on speed and expandability, but Drobo has the HP on price, ease of use, and security (Drobo's automatic data shuffling and mirroring are important).

The big question is... does it beat the HP MediaSmart windows home server? They are fairly similar, but it seems that the WHS does a lot more.
