If you are a camera fan with a penchant for exclusivity, here is your chance: Sony announced the release of a special version of its α350 digital SLR camera and DT 18-70mm F3.5-5.6 lens. Priced at $960, the kit is on sale in the Japanese Sony Style online store.
The new camera is technically identical to the α350 in black which is available in Japan for two months now. This means you get Sony’s Quick Autofocus Live View technology, a 14.2 megapixel APS-C CCD sensor and a 2.7-inch variable angle LCD screen.
What makes this kit so special?
- limited to just 200 pieces
- the new version comes in a color Sony calls “silky gold”
- buyers receive an exclusive body strap and other goodies
- all limited editions will get a serial number between 0 and 200
The α350 kit in black is sold in Japanese stores for about the same price so this deal is not too bad. But somehow the “silky gold” camera appears to be silver. Or is it just me?

Scarcity marketing at its best! You have to wonder why Sony would go to the trouble to manufacture only 200 units of this camera - which must have material manufacturing & supply chain costs - when the black version of the α350 with the same lens retails for only $60 less. That means Sony makes an extra $12K assuming they sell all 200 of these, which probably doesn’t come close to covering the costs, so somebody’s marketing budget is taking the hit for this…

Hi Andrew,
Yes, this is primarily to be seen as a marketing and branding move. Japan is a camera-crazy country so you need campaigns like this to get a little attention in this totally oversaturated market.
