I have to learn a little more about it (like reading the actual story, when I get a chance), but have to assume there's more to it than simply seeding an album.

Online rights are a tricky thing, and there's no reasonable expectation for everyone to know all their rights online. Not yet anyways. Unless the website specifically informs you that your actions are in violation of the law, its got to be hard to file criminal charges against a random seeder.

Is copyright infringement a violation of state or federal law? Or both?

OK I went and read part of this and its in England. Viva V!
