Sony’s Home still on track, if you count beta

Word around the blogosphere is that Sony’s PS3 version of Second Life, known as Home, was promised to launch in 2008, and it looks like that may be the case, though it might only be in beta.
It’ll be an open beta, meaning anyone with a PS3 and an Internet connection can log on and try it out, though it should be pointed out that they might crash your system or reset your characters at any time.
The question remains: will anyone play it? There are many PS3s around the country, but are PS3 players the same type of gamers who’d spend time in a virtual world like Home?
We’re not sure, but we doubt it While Sony’s said there will be tie ins with certain PS3 titles, we still think this is going to be a very nice party that nobody will go to.

Considering you know virtually nothing (as is apparent by the lack of any detail in your article) about what Home is going to offer, other than that it’s a virtual world. It doesn’t really appear that your opinion A) Matters, and B) Is warranted.
I’m not going to say that I’ve been ‘eagerly anticipating’ Home’s launch, per-se, however, I can assure you that I have moments where I look for a filler for gaming and other real life odds and ends. You know, something to browse through, keeps me occupied for awhile until I do something else, or go back to playing games. Sort of like how I came upon this article…actually. Not to mention that general human curiosity will bring people to a new thing, and with the presence of small games like bowling, pool etc… available w/in Home (*gasp* a detail!) it’s honestly not a stretch to believe that it will sport a fairly decent community that’ll only grow as Sony adds more and more. You have to admit, adding to Home, will undoubtedly be vastly easier than it’s creation.
Nor is Sony ‘new’ to gaming.

Of course people will play it, your forgetting there’s a lot of people with a lot of spare time out there.
With nothing to do, it’s probably not going 2 be a bad time filler.
Basically all comes down to the features, functionality and community of Home. If the only people we come accross are 13 yo kids that just wanna kick you in the nuts, and yell explitives, then spending time in Home will be much less inviiting.
However if it does actually provide a decent discovery mechanism to meet gamers with similar interests and engadge in intelligent interactions, then it could just be the hit Sony’s hoping for.

That’s the only amusing sounding thing I’ve heard about Home so far. Maybe I’ll try it, after all.
Seriously, though, not interested. At all. Let’s integrate XMB instead. And backwards compatibility with PS2 games on all models. Those, to me personally, would serve as a more useful ways to expend resources.
When all is said and done, I’m sure I’ll log in and try it. But with very finite time for sitting around, I’d rather be gaming instead of virtual bowling. Or swimming. Rather be doing the real things, and reaping some of the real benefits.
