Metal Gear Solid 4 has received a perfect score from lauded Japanese gaming mag Famitsu. Yes, the game with the horribly long cutscenes got a 40/40, joining the ranks of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Vagrant Story. (Now there’s a great game, Vagrant Story. It was like literature.) But do reviews even matter these days?
Look at GTA IV. The game got perfect scores all around, but you can’t seriously tell me the game was flawless. Like, what’s with the lack of analog control for Niko? Super Mario 64 had that, and that was 12 years ago.
Anyway, I think numbered reviews are overrated. Just say if it’s fun or not; they’re games, after all.
Say if they’re fun or not? The reviews do that in addition to providing a numbered scale. Think about it.
If I am thinking about splurging on a new game and there are 10 games or so that I’m thinking of getting, how beneficial would it be to see that 6 of them are fun and 4 of them are not fun?
It wouldn’t be helpful at all. The whole point is to have a relative scale to compare how good some games are to others, because, everyone can’t buy every single game so you often base purchases on HOW fun they are.
Siskel and Ebert were the only two in the world who could get away with saying a simple “good/not good” rating scale. And that’s largely because movie tickets and rentals are seen as more dispensible.
I see your point that uber long reviews may be taken a bit too seriously, but having some type of relative number scale is helpful to people deciding between the next game in their collection.

As far as the the first comment goes, I just have zero faith in video game reviews. MTV ran a feature last week saying how corrupt and shady the practice of game reviews is. Apparently Rockstar only let editors review the game while at the Rockstar office. That just strikes me as odd. But I’m super-cynical about everything, so don’t use me as a bellwether or anything.

“Horribly long cutscenes” – hmmm… OH BOY NOW THAT’S A BIG PROBLEM!!! Whatever will I do?!?! Oh I wonder what this button does? Hey guess what – IT SKIPS THE CUTSCENES!!!! If you really can’t handle 90 minute cutscenes, which is like basically getting a free movie, then JUST SKIP THEM!! Don’t complain about them and enjoy the game. WELL THEN HOW WILL I ENJOY THE STORY?!?! – NEWS FLASH…go ask everyone else who would love to sit through 90 minute cut scenes what happened. Yea that’s right – don’t enjoy the whole experience of Metal Gear Solid 4. Afterall its just a game. You’re supposed to have fun with them. Not sit through an epic story. Then again you really do want to experience the story huh? Works of “literature” require 2 hours to grasp a deep understanding and how amazing it truly is. Can no one but me and some others sit through a 90 minute cutscene. What is overrated really? It’s people continuously complaining about one small fault of a game and can’t seem to write anything good or enjoy the rest of the game. Have fun asking around the internet for the whole story of MGS 4 mate.
They are not horribly long cut scene, they are well made long cut scene… don’t make judgement before seeing the cut scene yourself.
Other than that, I agree with you. The best game reviewer is yourself.
They are both great games – i’v finished gta in 5 days and i was fully satisfied with every cent that i’d paid for it^_^ pre-odered mgs4 – 9.9 out of 10 from IGN.COM:) im looking forward at release:)
