Ouch. MSNBC comes out swinging with Super Mario Bros. 2 and Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link making the site’s Top 5 worst video game sequels list. The three other games on the list are Driv3r, Twisted Metal III, and Bomberman: Act Zero.
Maybe it’s just me, but I enjoyed Super Mario Bros. 2. Zelda 2 was okay, not great, but I wouldn’t put it in the top 5 worst sequels category. Again, ouch.
MSNBC’s rationale for putting the two games on the list is that Super Mario Bros. 2 “looked the part, but didn’t quite feel like you were playing a ‘Super Mario Bros’ game” and Zelda 2 went “too far in its effort to separate itself from the original.”
Your thoughts?
There’s no way SMB2 should be on the list. It ranks in my top 5! One can only hope GOW2 will be in the top 5 as well…..
I have to agree about SMB2. It was a pretty darn good game, once you got past the fact that it bore no resemblance to the original SMB. As to Zelda 2, it was a very good game for the time period…. though a little bit on the ‘hard side’ with it’s ‘lives’ function and cheap-shot bosses, ESPECIALLY the last two bosses….. damn Thunderbird!

Super Mario Bros 2 was originally a game in Japan called Doki Doki Panic. Nintendo just changed all the characters around. The real Super Mario Bros 2 was released in Japan.
Zelda 2 should have taken up #1 through #5 of the top 5 worst sequels… it didn’t suck… it was an absolute disgrace of a game, and calling it a game is an insult to any other game that even came close to sucking as much as this one.
Act Raiser 2 would probably be up there as well, first one was amazing for its time but it went downhill fast with the second one… and don’t even get me going on the waste of electrons that made-up Commando with its endless “do you wish to continue from where you just died” screen which meant you could walk-through the entire game in about 40 minutes not caring who shot you or how many times you “died”.

Bomberman Act Zero definitely should have been number 1.
I’m surprised they didn’t just list “Every Single Sonic the Hedgehog Game Since 2001″ on there. Seriously, once Sonic went onto the next-gen consoles, he straight up died. Platinum hits on PS2 / XBox 360 or not, those games are horrible.
WHAT? I’ve played the nex-gen Sonic games, and they were pretty darn good games. A little on the ‘difficult’ side, but pretty good games nonetheless.

Zelda 2 was way different from the first Zelda, but it’s not like the worst game ever made. Took me a while to finish it for sure.
(Those Bomberman sequels I’d agree with).
And as much as I like SMB2, Sean is right, it’s technically not really SMB2. (I’ve never played the real version released in Japan, I’m guessing it’s a lot like the first one?).
Super Mario Brothers 2 was the best game on the NES (even better than SMB3 I think) - MSNBC is crazy for putting on a worst of list - Link I can see and bomberman was terrible - but SMB2 is a holy relic of a forgotten age!

Zelda 2 wasn’t that great, but its not the worst sequel. They clearly screwed the list up. Where’s Devil May Cry 2?
i think that list is pretty bonked. i can think of a few worse sequals then those. Granted the zelda: adventures of link was pretty bad. I liked it but i consider it a different series then the other zelda titles.
