I’ve got a close friend who works at Microsoft, previously with the HD-DVD division and now in the E&D division (Xbox, zune).
I’m told MS will upstage Apple with a Monday 9am PDT announcement (1 hour before WWDC) via press release that the Xbox 360 will get Blu-Ray before Christmas. Price was “under the current Elite”, but i could get any more details.
Could this be the mysterious company rumored to be launching something before WWDC?

While it is certainly news if the XBOX does support Blu-ray. But to upstage Apple is a bit on ridiculous side. Microsoft can certainly announce this news, but it will do nothing to divert attention away from anything going on at the WWDC. Do you honestly think anything Microsoft says takes any attention away from Apple these days? Microsoft may continue to make billions off Windows and office, but one thing they are not is upstage material. If anything is closer to the truth, most feel Microsoft is quite boring, and lacks new news that any consumer would care about.
Even the the whole Yahoo and Microsoft potential buyout come true would do nothing to transfer the limelight away from WWDC. Microsoft is about as boring as cake mix don’t ya think. Perhaps because Balmer is about as boring as cake mix.

Still waiting for price drop on both burners and readers to come down as well as media of Single Layer discs.
They better release the drive on the elite verison. I enjoy it but find it frusterating at the same time , that i need to constantly upgrade my system to stay up to par with todays technology. I’ll probably end up trading in my elite on BD equiped elite. Than I can’t really justify getting a PS3 at the prices they are now. The only reason I will be purchasing a PS3 is for FF13. I have said that for about a year now haha. We’ll see if this comes true. Microsoft pretty blantly said that they will not be releasing a Blu-ray drive in the 360, but how knows a few corporations have been known to lie from time to time.
That is great news! but I heard from a friend of a friend that Charmin is set to upstage both Microsoft and Apple by releasing a new 4 ply toilet paper. It is said to be as strong as a towel and as absorbent as a chamois. It is completely biodegradable, plays MP3s and also Bluerays. Best of all it is cheaper than both the Xbox 360 Elite AND the 3G Iphone!!
Old news my fiend. Search for Henry_Jenkins_UCiSchool_06Feb2008 :)
This is a false rumor. It is against Microsoft corporate policy to support Java on a Microsoft platform.
Blu-Ray is impossible on Microsoft product because of this Microsoft’s Java ban and $60 per player royalty.
I have also heard the same possibility. It looks to be true, and will definitely assure Microsoft a strong hold in the future of console wars.
How does this assure Microd!ck a strong-hold in the console market? Add-ons after the release changes are never the lowest common denominator. Because of that the developers never truly tap into those often smaller sub-markets within a small niche to begin with. Like the add-on HD DVD drive did absolutely nothing for Microsoft or those fools backing that lame standard.
If Microd!ck wants to back Blu-ray now it will do little for them, little for customers, and even little to nothing for Sony. They get to sell a few more blu-rays, sure. But nothing significant.
Microd!ck’s next console should support a new platform with 1080p output and blu-ray, and perhaps a new to Microd!ck feature called, “Manufacturing Quality” so that it can better compete. For now, the PS3 is gaining and will continue to do so. It’s really between Wii and the PS3. Microd!ck’s console will start to fade away.
The reality is, Microd!ck is being systematically replaced by more relevant technologies. They’ve lost or are losing their core focus. OpenOffice will continue to gain on them slowly eroding away their cash-cow. They will continue to get b!tch-slapped in consumer, entertainment, and cloud computing. I was totally hoping to watch them blow $46 billion on Lamer-hoo. It’s not often cake-mix-boy can blow so much money on a worthless concept with zero chance of doing anything to spite Google. Hearts and Minds Microd!ck. Learn the meaning of it. It’s pre-marketing 101, or don’t you hire anyone with brains over there?

That, friends, is what we call a fanboy.
LOL!!
Some people can’t accept change… in this case MS dominating the console market.
Why be surprised that Microcrap makes us spend money again and again to have working hardware? they willfully release unfinished products so that people spend (= lose) money to be able to use it … It would be time Americans open their eyes and throw Microcrap away!!!
So what you are saying is that Microsoft willfully released unfinished xbox 360s so that they can turn around and spend millions of dollars to give people 3 year warranties?…..which includes shipping both ways and cost of repair? If you got the original premium console…….you do not have to upgrade to enjoy games or what not…..and with or without a bluray you can still play games on the premium.
alex you are a fanboy in denial. If you owned a 360 then you would know where the gaming is at. I have not turned on my gaystation 3 to play a game in like 6 months. Keep your idea that the gaystation is the greatest think in the world, it just proves that you are not a hardcore gamer and a fanboy.
Actually, Nintendo is dominating the console market.
Still, I agree that Mr. Alexzander is the epitome of a fanboy. “Microdick”? Seriously?! That’s almost as bad as calling Microsoft “M$”.
Clearly fake. MS officials in the E & D division have been saying till they’re blue in the face (no pun intended) that there are no current plans to offer a Blu-Ray drive; they’re pinning their hopes on digital downloads.
of course they’re going to deny it. If they didn’t deny it, they’d have to say goodbye to alot of potential 360 sales until this sku supposedly comes out.
I hope its true so they finally make an xbox that doesn’t sound like a freight train when a disk is spinning.
I hope this is total BS. This would be sooooooooooo stupid. It’s not like they could suddenly start making blu-ray format games.
This still does not make sense. Blu-ray requires a JAVA VM if you want the interactivity that exists on the disc. What are the odds that Microsoft is going to license the JAVA VM? Why whould they add a drive that does not let you use the extras on a disc?
Second what about the fact that blu-ray drives spins a lot slower than the internal DVD drive does on the 360? Unless there is some faster drive out there it will not be able to spin fast enough to run the games built for the system.
I don’t get it. How does their Blu-Ray announcement upstage WWDC? Would it be nice to have an Xbox with built in Blu-Ray, Yes. But for MS to think that it would upstage Apple’s announcements on Monday is laughable. It’s kinda sad.
I own an Xbox and like many, purchased the HD DVD drive. To have everything in one package would be nice. That being said, if it’s true that’s great, but by no means does it upstage anyone’s announcement.
Mmm…. how is this news? It’s as obvious and predictable as the tide!

In the years, I’ve been paying attention, Microsoft almost always attempts to upstage Apple on event days. I haven’t yet seen them succeed.
the discussion is short term at best, the studios will drop any format for downloads once the financial side looks better

Thanks for the link to nothignness idiot. Certainly contributes to the validity of any statement from you.
Everybody…let’s keep it cool and civil….
Um its 9:15 PDT and no announcement from MS, so this looks like 100% BS. Just like Blu-ray in fact!
Why would MS put a key Sony technology, particularly one with Java in it, into the Xbox? Makes no sense.
everyone seemingly has a tipster these days. :| how much are tipsters running anyway?
So…..can you ask your “friend” (if he actually exists anywhere outside your own bullshit creating head….) where this announcement was? What happened to it? This was all over the net and now NOTHING…… cheap way of getting more hits on your site? Or are you the victim of a now-laughing-his-socks-off-at-your-gullibility scammer?
Either way, 3 days later, no blu-ray, no announcement, no upstaging of Apple. Oh yes whats that smell… BULLSHIT.
very interesting
