Two brave senators ask Customs to stop searching laptops willy nilly
by Nicholas Deleon on June 26, 2008

Did you know that it’s perfectly legal for U.S. customs agents to search your laptop, cellphone and other electronic doodad without your consent, and without any suspicion of wrongdoing? That hardly seems American, or even French, but it’s true. For the time being, that is, for two do-good senators have called on U.S. Customs and Border Protection to knock it off with he unreasonable searches and seizures.

Whether or not Customs heeds Sens. Feingold and Leahy’s pleas, who knows. Good to see one or two people actually bothering to protect our rights rather than use fear to blah blah political rant etc.

How come I’m expecting to see a million comments on this post regarding “blah blah blah my rights my rights my rights….”

  • Borders have always been a place where your civil liberties have taken a backseat to security.

Been that way for at least 50 years. Common sense, really.
