Japan used to do this as well but now people copy them instead. This is a transition phase for the country, in 10 years, China brands will be as well known and respected as the current brands. The next Steve Jobs and Bill Gates of the world would most likely be from China. They have the law of large number on their side.

Why do they piggyback so much? By doing so, they put NO money into R&D, they just rip apart the original and copy the IP. They need no marketing capital, the original brand already has that established for them. So the answer is because it is so much more profitable than trying to create a brand and product of their own, when all they need to invest in is the manufacturing process and nothing else, of an already successful brand and product.

You wonder why companies are selling entire prodcuct divisions to China -- they knock off everything we make here, put no money into R&D, and sell it for less because they had no expenses developing the product. And they do it with a straight face.

Its harder to justify working so hard to innovate things when you know an entire country with a huge economy is just going to rip you off, and grow stronger by your hard work.
