Google has announced an iPhone version of Google Talk which is simply an iPhone-ized browser-based version of the Google’s text chat application. This means you can’t talk over the Interwebs but you can tap out halting messages to your friends on the iPhone’s screen and, thanks to Safari’s tendency to clear pages randomly, you probably won’t enjoy a sustained conversation.
When the App store finally launches expect about 500 VoIP solutions for the iPhone on the first day. Until then, sit back, think of England, and enjoy your browser-based Google Talk while it’s fresh.

I’ve been using it all day and it totally rocks. No problems. I find the need to chat with colleagues on the go a necessity. It is efficient, clean and keeps me awake in boring meetings.
I don’t know anyone that actually uses Google Talk to Talk, its voip is incredibly limited.
”Safari’s tendency to clear pages randomly,…” i definitely hate when safari dies that
BeeJive has a much better iPhone IM client. But, I don’t use IM so it isn’t much use to me (unless Twitter brings IM support back).
I’m sure Google will come out with a much better native client for the iPhone and it will most likely be free.
