Photo of new checkpoint friendly bag

More news on the approaching possibility of keeping your laptop in a case while breezing through airport security. Along with bag-maker Skooba Design’s “beautiful prototypes, patents and trademarks pending,” they also posted a photo of a new security-friendly laptop case prototype for the new line, and they expect to have models available in time for the back to school/fall/holiday season.
The Transportation Security Administration says it has been working with luggage manufactures to create checkpoint friendly bags, which will allow travelers to keep laptops in their cases while slogging through security lines. TSA chief Kip Hawley told USA Today, that they should be in a position in a couple of months to allow people with the ‘right’ kinds of bags to leave electronics in them for scanning.
As shown, the new cases will unfold and when placed flat on the X-ray belt, screeners should be able to see the laptop inside as easily as when it was in a security bin all by itself.
While Skooba CEO Michael Hess, thinks security friendly bags, “could be huge,” I’m guessing it’ll take a bit longer than anyone hopes for this hot new development to have much an impact on security line wait times.
Skooba also has this flashy (if grainy) promotional video.

I’m sorry, but I’m massively skeptical at the prospect of this working, and in fact think it’ll probably make things worse. company works very closely with the USPS, and like any other government branch (including the TSA), the people at the top can do whatever they want in terms of legislation, but expecting that to uniformly translate into action at the frontline level is ridiculous. There are USPS workers who have never even heard of legislation that was passed 2 years ago, and I have to constantly argue with them, and point out the actual regulation language, then wait for them to check with their superiors, who check with their superiors, and so on and so forth up the line. In the end, I tell my customers that it’s more important to keep their local postmaster happy then it is to be right — being right doesn’t get your mail sent out if the local postmaster hasn’t got a clue.
Imagine some rep at the front line level, who’s been trained to tell you to take yoru laptop out for the last few years — do you really want to stand around and argue TSA regulations with them? Or try to somehow prove that your bag fits within those regulations?
Please.

If you understand the acronyms CASS, DPV, NCOA, RDI, LACS, as well as the rules surrounding Carrier Route, Simplified Addressing, Palletization, etc, and how much they’ve changed over the last few years then you’d understand. Or, instead of talking smack, why not go ask mommy to make you another sandwich, retreat to the basement fort you made, and get back to playing Second Life, mmmkay sparky? ;)

We’ve been using the checkpoint friendly laptop bag since May and haven’t had a TSO turn us away. The way it works is so obvious and works so well it’s a relief to them as well as the traveler.
This is going to be the standard laptop bag if you’re ever going to go through X-ray screening.

Correct me if Im wrong but is this really X-ray we are talking about here? Cause X-rays certainly can pass through clothes and even some thin metal plates. So unless your average laptop bag is fully armored I dont see why they wont “see” the laptop in the bag.

This is exactly why in the UK for example you now can leave your laptop in the bag when going through security.
All this is window dressing, the whole job of the TSA is to give the traveling public a secure feeling, that’s it.
