Are you in an AT&T 3G coverage area?

East coast is the best coast

David Pogue mentioned in his review of That Device that AT&T’s 3G coverage here in the U.S. is still a little spotty. This handy map—the blue coloring shows where you’ll find 3G coverage—shows exactly where you’ll be able to use the high-speed network. Most big cities are covered, as you might expect.

Those of you in Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming can forget about 3G for now, though. AT&T doesn’t so much as provide 3G in a single one of those states’ cities.

Keep in mind that AT&T says it’s expanding 3G coverage every day, so it’s not like currently non-3G locations will be without it forever.

I’m currently in Dutchess County, NY, and there’s sure as hell no 3G coverage up here, and we’re only about 70 miles north of New York City. Why, then, should someone up here wait on a line for That Device, which then only offers GPS as a new feature? The real hotness, as we all know, is the new firmware and App Store, which can be used on the original version of That Device (and iPod touch for $10).

Now I toss it to y’all: are you covered by the warmth of high-speed 3G? If not, will you still be getting up at 8am tomorrow?

I don’t think we have coverage in New Hampshire, either. I’m not going to get an iPhone 3G since I’m not going to pay $30 for a service I’m not going to use entirely.

I live in Iowa, so as you mentioned I do not have any 3G coverage. Although I still plan on buying a 3G iphone and switching from verizon. I can’t help my self, This gen is just so sexy!

I am in a 3G coverage area in Belgium, but Steve Jobs lied when he said the iPhone 3G would be available worldwide for $199. It is over US$700 (525euros) here for the 8gb model, the 16gb is considerably more.

I will stick with my 8GB hacked EDGE iPhone and wait for someone to crack the 2.0 software before upgrading.

If Mobistar ever comes down to the real world in price, then I will upgrade to a 16gb 3G. But not for 615 euros. Email on EDGE is plenty fast. GPS would be nice for navigating the cities on foot, I get lost in Brussels a lot, but not US$965-nice.

Yeah, I’m going to wait for the 2.0 to be jailbroken as well. I don’t need to be all cool and trendy and have the Iphone 3G before everyone else.

Maybe it’s obvious, but just to be clear: it’s the BLUE spots that are 3G….

Good gravy, whoever wrote that comment under the east coast photo has never been to the west coast! The east and west coasts are very different. The east coast was settled with horses and feet to carry people from place to place giving us medium size cities spaced about an hour apart by car. The west was desert or farms and ranches until the car was king. The result was extremely sparse, extremely large areas of land followed by massive cities. And that’s just what you see on these maps. Thus same coverage east and west.

@davidpogue: Right, the blue is where you’ll find 3G.

@Susan: I was kidding with that east coast jab. I was actually considering moving to San Francisco for a while. Instead I’m going to Europe for a bit.

I’m moving to 3G coverage in 2 days (coincidentally my current city just got coverage on 7/1), but I already have a 3G Windows Mobile phone that does much more than the iphone 3G. So, no I will not be a fanboi waiting in line for an overpriced, under-featured hunk of plastic that requires data plans that are a rip off.

I’ll settle with my VX8300. Even if ATT did cover low populace areas such as the whole state of Montana. iPhone FTL. Besides right now I get unlimited data for 50 bucks a month and at work I get the same for free.

Does anyone know of future plans to improve coverage in Iowa with AT&T?

Yeah, I’m in Iowa city, So I’d be interested in that as well. We just got EVDO Service here for Verizon less than a month ago. Which is rediculous in my opinion.

According to the map I should have 3G coverage. Simple reception on my side of town (Kearny, NJ) was horrible until last week when they activated a new tower on the roof of my apartment building. Got home with the new phone today. No 3G.=( I’m deep in the blue area of the map yet I’m experiencing no 3G goodness. Was I just conned into paying $15 more a month for the same service?
