Nvidia slashes price of GTX 280, 260: Now on par with ATi’s prices

Hope you didn’t buy an Nvidia GTX 260 or 280 in the past month, since their prices were just slashed overnight. The GTX 280, once retailing for $649, will now set you back only $499. Meanwhile, the GTX 260, once $399, is now $299. Or, in scary percentages, that’s a 30 percent and 25 percent drop, respectively.
As Devin mentioned in last week’s podcast (and previous posts), Nvidia is under pressure, price-wise, from ATi this generation. For a while there we were all like, “ATi, what gives? Your cards stink.” Its upcoming 4870 X2, which is rumored for an August release, is essentially as powerful as the GTX 280. How was Nvidia supposed to sell a GPU for $150 more than the 4870 X2 if they were essentially the same thing?
Seeing these prices, the thought of serious PC gaming seems so absurd to me. I’m fine with a 360 and my MacBook for the occasional hour of WoW

Pretty silly statement from somebody who usually writes some pretty smart stuff. I’m glad you are happy with your toys, but just because you have found joy in your own little world, don’t disparage others and their hobbies.
FYI - No, I am not one of those who choose to spend $300-$1k on video for their machines. I build mine more along the line of my budget - but I am not going to call hobbyists who choose to do so “absurd”.

Absurd in the “wow that’s a lot of money to play video games” sense. Just how I perceive it, is all.
Well, I was always a console gamer growing up, so I was never bitten by the PC gaming bug. (My family never had a PC powerful enough to play anything more demanding than Minesweeper.) Nowadays, I have so little time to game that I’d rather just kill an hour or two on the Xbox and not have to worry about drivers and heat sinks and buying new RAM/GPU/CPU every two years. It’s just easier, is all.

I’d have to come to the defense of Nic on this one, because serious PC gaming is slightly absurd. But so is serious console gaming. That 50″ HDTV is pretty hefty in price, even compared to my 22″ Wide and 19″ dual screen set up. I like to play my games above recommended so I pay for a mid range card, not the latest and greatest since it changes every 3 months. Isn’t serious gaming somewhat of an oxymoron.
