It looks like August is the chosen month for the release of Dell’s long-rumored low cost notebook, upsetting the likes of Asus and Acer in the process. DigiTimes cites “market sources” in coming up with the timeline. It’s still Taiwan-based Compal doing the manufacturing, with Samsung said to be supplying the LCD panel.
Just in time for back-to-school, then. Unless you’re a film student (and need to frequently edit video), one of these low cost, sub-notebooks should be able to pump out essay after essay with no problems.
Best of all, maybe, is the price, which DT puts at $299—the price of an iPhone 3G!
How about a dual-quad-core notebook? Sure it would need to be hooked-up to a portable air conditioner but a mighty gaming machine it would be!

The Atom chip is no slouch. It’s the graphics card that is lacking in these. I don’t see that changing due to the heat and cost. These things were meant to be low powered, low cost netbooks. I would like it though!
Of all of the computers I have owned, including my Gateway 286 C/prompt circa 1980, my Dell laptop is by far the worst. Total POS, barely runs, Vista sucks like you knew it would. Total garbage.

Hopefully someone will be able to port Kalaway or JAS onto one of these bad boys and then we can all have a $299 entry-level Apple computer.
It can’t possibly run Vista well. So is it going to be a Linux machine? That would be cool. I might have considered it before the iPhone, but now with the much smaller form factor with email and real web browsing, I can travel laptop free for weeks and still shoot thousands of 16.7 megapixel images with my 1Ds Mark II and drop the photos into my NEXTO DI and use the iPhone to keep the boss informed. Who needs such a weak compromise of a computer?
I believe they said it will be Linux.
I guess it depends on what you do. iPhone is great and I can use it for a day or two away from a laptop. But it can’t do everything.
These small low cost laptops are great for many people.
