AT&T finalizes free Wi-Fi goodness

All of AT&T’s 17,000 hotspots are currently open and ready for business, including most Starbucks stores less the ones the close because we are entering the second Great Depression. Hotspots are free to AT&T iPhone subscribers.
All of the spots are free, so just roll on up and give them a go. If you’re at a Starbucks today, try it out and show us what it looks like. We’re very curious.

Only for iPhone users though - bummer, given that I pay for data on my phone.

That makes the expensive AT&T iphone plans a little easier to swallow. I think that is a great move by AT&T.

Wait a minute, what happened? Originally, in addition to iPhone users, Starbucks card holders were supposed to get free wifi. It was pretty straightforward — just get, like, a $20 card or something, and register it online, and I think you were supposed to be set.
Did that change? Or is it working already? (Maybe they just haven’t rolled that out yet.)

This is nice on the road, but being in a 3G area and WiFi at home we’ll see how often I get down on it. Great choice by AT&T though.

How does it recognize if the device is an iPhone or not? If it’s just the browser’s reporting of what it is, could we trick it into letting us use free wifi on other phones/laptops?
