I want my old apps. The vast majority of the AppStore apps either suck or cost money when they were free before.

I don't care how much demand exists. Those apps made the 1.1.4 firmware more interesting, customizable, and entertaining.

Try to find a decent, free, game of Solitaire on the AppStore.
Try to find a free game of chess on the Appstore.
Try to mark all of your email as READ using apps from the AppStore.
Try to hide applications using apps from the AppStore.
Try to customize the icons on your iPhone using apps from the AppStore.

Those of you that have never tried a jailbroken phone have no idea what you're missing. That's fine if you don't want to find out but those of us that have been outside the cave and seen the sun refuse to go back into that dark hole you live in.

FREEDOM!!!

Yep, plenty of things still very desirable to do, even with the appstore. Summerboard themes. SSH access. Mobile scrobbling. Terminal app. Etc.

Fair enough. I didn't say there was anything wrong with jailbreaking the iPhone 3G, I just didn't think there'd still be much demand for it now with the App Store.

Jailbreak away!

::
Now is when I ask what’s the point of jailbreaking an iPhone 3G when there’s already a fully functional, Apple-approved App Store?
::

When you want to run non-apple approved software. You can write your own software and load it on the phone, or run one of the sweet apps that someone else has written (but which apple will never put on the App Store because Apple/AT&T don't want it).

Examples: An application that lets your share your iphone's 3g connection with computers via its 802.11, VoIP applications, etc.

The answer, of course, is that Apple's official App Store carries only applications which have been approved by Apple as providing only the functionality Apple wants to be available, meaning no tools like OpenSSH (for logging in and transferring files to/from the iPhone), for example. More importantly, though, jailbreaking appears to be a prerequisite for unlocking the handsets to work with networks other than the official ones; in the UK at least, the cheapest of the original iPhone tariffs is more than *double* the price of a comparable plan from other networks! (The new cheaper 3G tariff closes the gap slightly, but it's still almost double.)
