Japanese Tech powerhouses NTT Communications and Recruit developed a digital signage system capable of simultaneously emitting scents and showing compatible commercials. A prototype is currently being tested in an underground shopping mall in Tokyo.
The idea is to get passery-by to walk into a cafe or buy a certain product by not only showing them video ads but also by by appealing to one’s sense of smell.
Once you are hooked, you can grab a discount coupon from a box located just below the 42-inch LCD display and redeem it in all stores and eateries participating in the test run.

According to 12Godigital, the capital expense of digital signage is thought too risky without a clear indication of the value return.
And 12GoDigital is so confident its solutions make a difference for retailers that the company is now inviting Restaurants and small business owners in Utrecht Province to engage in a free trial.
Small business owners can take up the opportunity to experience the benefits of digital signage for up to a month, free of charge.
12GoDigital is really committed to helping small and independent retailers access new technology that is affordable and makes a positive impact on their sales. We’re prepared to share the risk with small businesses that want first hand experience at no cost. That’s why we’ve initiated this unique trial and we’re hoping small businesses in Utrecht province will take advantage of it.”
The trial, which commences in June starts with a consultation and then the set up of a 12GoDigital SUN-SG8 Digital Signage player.
Ideally suited to counter top, Over-Promo wall and on-shelf display, the 12GoDigital SUN-SG8 player is a compact unit designed to blend unobtrusively into the environment whilst still delivering a sharp, clear image and high quality Video, JPEG and audio prompts to shoppers.
