Ford Flex wagon: Not nearly good enough gas mileage to justify its awkward appearance

The Ford Flex is not a joke, but going by what the Wall Street Journal has said, it might as well be. The new car, which goes on sale this year, is one of them there wagons, a type of car last seen on the Nickelodeon show Pete & Pete. Needless to say, no American male in 2008 wants to be seen driving a wagon, especially when the wagon’s gas mileage isn’t too hot. It gets 24 miles per gallon, which is sorta OK, sure, but if Ford expects working class dudes to drive the Flex, it definitely needs to bump that number up.
Apparently the Flex was conceived and designed before the current fuel price crisis hit, so Ford was caught unawares… with a horrible looking “cross-over.”
The moral is, if Detroit still wants to produce 7+ seat cars, it has to take current fuel prices into account.

I saw this at a local Miami dealership on one of those riser thingies… I nearly crashed due to its hideousness.

This car reminds me of a car they made in the 50’s, however the one from the 50’s was much better looking! LOL

This is my former car, and trust me, at 225HP and 230lb/ft torque, it qualified as bad ass.
The car above, on the other hand, not so much.

It’s actually kinda hot looking if you get a picture from the right angle. Theres some good ones at http://fordflex.info
Plus, the sunroofs are pretty kickass.
I wouldn’t buy this thing myself but I could see a family having this as one of a few cars they’ve got in/on the garage/street.

I would drive it and I am a male in 2008 so there! This looks cool to me - I like the throwback lines and whatnot. Better than a Minivan if you have kids and want to haul all their crap and still have room for yours.

Interested to hear about any vehicles out there that seat up to 7 that get better gas mileage on the highway than 24mpg. (I’ll make it easy for you - there aren’t any!)
There are literally 10’s oif millions of current SUV customers out there driving vehicles that get no better than 16 or 17mpg on the highway but who need the space that the Flex offers - this car will fly despite your cynicism.
BTW - have you driven it?

I am also a male in my mid 30’s in America in 2008 and I would drive one too! I personally like the look of this vehicle, it has kind of a cool 50’s surf wagon inspired look. PLus features like Synch, speech recognition, nav, the very cool Vista Roof setup, available rear fridge are all cool features.
Keep in mind this thing is nearly the same size as a Chevy Tahoe fullsize SUV, where the SUV probably gets 17mpg the Flex can get up to 24mpg. COmpare that to even the Enclave, etc or even minivans like the Odessey and Town & Country and you’ll find they all get worse MPG.

This is what a Mini Cooper looks like when it gets old.
