Karmazin appears to reassure fans during Opie and Anthony

Possibly their worst photo ever, and one that’s several years old

Mel Karmazin, the CEO of Sirius XM Radio, was just on the Opie and Anthony show

Karmazin also said that he didn't know if Opie and Anthony and Ron and Fez (another fine radio program heard on XM channel 202, noon to 3pm) alone constitute a channel. So one would think he has some changes in mind as far as that goes. That could mean moving them to a new channel, or bringing additional talent to 202 to flesh out the programming. Jim Brewer would feel right at home, right?

That was pretty much the gist of it. It sounds as if Opie and Anthony are more than welcome on Sirius XM Radio, possibly, maybe having to give up on terrestrial radio in the process.

CBS, you probably already know, has a wonderful, free application for the iPhone on the Apple App Store. Terrestrial radio will have to continue to innovate along those lines if it wants to compete in the current radio climate, where everyone has every song they’d ever want on their iPod or cellphone, or can tune into Internet radio using programs like Pandora. That, and now a combined satellite radio company less concerned with making the other guy look bad, and more concerned with convincing people to leave commercial-laden terrestrial radio once and for all. (Karmazin also expressed his dislike for satellite radio music channels with commercials, so expert moves in that direction, too.)

Interesting times to be a radio fan, to be sure.

Props for calling out the horror that is that photo, and that it was several years old. I think a channel that had Opie and Anthony, Jim Breuer, and Ron and Fez would be the best thing that has happened to radio.

Cindy Sheehan and Anthony are going to be smashed by Mel. Cindy is a no talent hack and rides Anthony’s talent. Sirius subs will slam them too. Take your one-AIDS-joke and crawl back to Buffalo..oh yeah…Philly, no…um..West Palm,..uuuh

As long as O&A stay on I don’t care what else he does. How about a line-up of O&A, Ron & Fez, Nick Dip, Jim Brewer and than a replay of O&A and Ron & Fez. Mel needs to keep those of us with recordable devices happy as well. I can’t get O&A at work and my battery life is not good enough to charge from 6-12 everyday. Keep the show replays please.

Who’s that woman in the photo with Anthony ? Nice hair Op-. He looks like a soccer mom.

I was shocked that Mel went on the show today, I really thought we were in for 63 more days of uncertainty. With Howie and Mel in the mix, you never know what could happen. If they get offered a long contract in exchange for being on satellite radio only, i think they should take it.

Can’t wait for Virus Tour Saturday !!! Hope they get Breuer to perform, it would really be a brilliant cross-promotion to help kick-off the merge.

Clear Channel Sucks! (Who am I?)

“(Karmazin also expressed his dislike for satellite radio music channels with commercials, so expert moves in that direction, too.)”

This was the best part of this article. Screw Clear Channel!
It’s about time someone stands up to them and prevents them from taking over the entertainment world.

I am a Howard Stern Fan, not really a fan of O&A, but I do admire them sticking out their tenure at XM. Howard Stern helped build Sirius, whether he garnered fans or exposure to the other content on the radio and he definitely helped financially. O&A are surely a part of XM’s success, as their company had content that helped allow it to grow, too, albeit slower than Sirius. I do not think that O&A is as vital to this new company’s success as Howard is, but it offers another option. Several people call Stern everyday and voice their displeasure with the show but they keep coming back. With 18.5 million people swinging one radio dial now between the available satellite channels, there is an option for everybody. I would give O&A a chance, as replays of both their shows and Howard’s shows would allow those of us who may be interested in both a chance to listen. Hopefully Howard and O&A can be mature about what I expect to be their renewed competition, but what is really important is to provide content that appeals to the masses to get more Sirius XM subscribers, not favoritism of one channel or another. If anything, get rid of most of those annoying DJs on Sirius!

If Scott Ferrall could make up with O&A and put him on the same channel as O&A and Ron and Fez, we’re one step closer to rebuilding the old WNEW lineup.

Only two things make satillite better than i-pod, original programming and sports. But sports are only good if you’re on the road or if there’s some kind of blackout restriction. That leaves only original programming for the majority of the time.

OnA and Ron and Fez are extremely popular and want to keep their gig. Dumping them would only serve to take away the most valuable piece of satillite programming. Sure, Stern has more notoriety and a much larger back catalog, but he makes (I guess) probably around 20 times what the rest of these guys make combines (well maybe more like 10, who knows?) They’re a real bargain.

If OnA get dumped I don’t know exactly what I’ll do, probably drop my mobile sub and keep my car sub. But I can’t listen to any of the music stations on XM, they all suck! Maybe some more original music programming like the 30 days of Coldplay (even though Coldplay sucks it’s a good idea). Heck, even in my car the only thing I listen to if not baseball or 202 is XM Kids when my 3 yr old is riding with me.

Regarding Stern fans though, do OnA fans go on Stern discussion boards and back him? Dude, that’s so weak! If those are the kind of fans he attracts I don’t think I want to listen to his show.

That’s the thing. Obviously there are some horrible O&A zombies as well, but the Stern fans get insane sometimes. I heard about a guy who got his windowshield smashed because he had a WOW sticker, and the guy put some kind of Stern sticker over it.

Fact is, if O&A were failures, Stern fans wouldn’t even bother.

Both Stern and O&A are popular and successful. It’s a lie to say otherwise.

Just for the record, when Mel said he wasn’t sure if Opie & Anthony and Ron & Fez constitute a channel, he WAS NOT talking about changing XM 202.

He was talking about offering them to current Sirius customers as part of a $4 “Best of XM” teaser package of 11 channels, and would it be worthwhile to use one of those 11 channels to completely duplicate XM 202 on Sirius radios. It makes sense not to, since most of the day is made up of various replays of the live shows. A better option would be to offer a channel on Sirius that airs those two shows live, then adds other XM programming after 3PM (perhaps a live baseball game or some other sporting event).
