My white iPhone 3G crack

by John Biggs on July 31, 2008

Ladies and gentlemen, I present my iPhone 3G crack. This appeared after a day of fairly heavy usage with lots of pulling in and out of the pocket and briefcase. I didn’t sit on it or smash it but I saw this coming when I pulled it out and noticed some other scuffing. It almost looks as if a thin layer of plastic has rubbed off. I haven’t seen it happening on any other part of the iPhone and I was putting on an InvisiShield, which is a sort of plastic shield, when I noticed it.

People currently believe that the back is some sort of ceramic but I believe it’s laminated metal with a thin layer of protection over the white or black. While I wasn’t expecting the white 16GB to stay white forever, I definitely didn’t expect this one week in. We’ll get to the bottom of this.

  • This has been a problem with white Macbook plastics for awhile.

Hi John, I just checked my 18 month old (Blackberry) and granted it only ever rests on a bed of down feathers and is encrusted in 7 aftermarket protective gizmos it’s still crack free! Hmm. Oh wait, look, it even has a keyboard :)

  • @ Boutros-Boutros Sam:

    Oh Snap. No you didn’t.

PS. I’ve also got a blackberry (yes the one with the keyboard) and beat the crap out of it on a daily basis. No cracks and no problems. I really can’t believe that you iphone people buy into that piece of crap. I’ve got an iTouch and a MacBook, so I obviously like Apple, but from using the iTouch for a day or so I knew that the iPhone interface would be balls for typing email and text (which afterall is what the thing should do). The amount of times I go on the internet on my phone is so little after the first month (which was just the novelty factor) that I hardly believe that anyone uses it. It’s slow as balls on the 3G still or WiFi. I’ll wait till I get home thanks.

Anyways, that’s my rant. Apple needs to get their stuff together before they will be a real competitor.

Oh, and since switching to the new firmware on my itouch (which costs money!) the thing is slow as hell. Thanks for that one.

    • problems ive encountered with blackberry: GPS is not even worth having on the device, by the time its loaded, u could of walked half the way.

the stupid little ball thing in the middle is sooooo anoying, im sure its 10000 times easier to press ur finger on an icon to load something than trying to navigate with a lil tiny spinning ball thing.

Typing on the keyboard is worse than the iphone!! iphone took me a few days to get used to but now it just feels natural, typing on my blackberry was horrible, keys to close together, didnt like the feel when they were pressed.

and I gota disagree on the internet usage, I’ve been using the internet a hell of a lot more on my iphone than I hav on my comp at home, due to not being home as much and carrying a laptop around is a bit anoying. plus jailbreak and tethering is ideal when staying away from home with a laptop.

the responce time of the blackberry is really anoying, on my iphone u press SMS and a second later (if that) hey presto, u got ur messages up. on my blackberry to do the same takes around 3-5 seconds, sounds petty i know, but quicker loading times cant be a bad thing can it.

my blackberrys screen has a LOT of scratches on it due to keys in pocket without a screen sheild, my iphone is 10% scratch free (from the human eye) from the same environments.

web browsing on the blackberry is very anoying too, browser navigation is anoying, i suppose it depends what signal ur getting and what connection ur using but my iphone has always loaded pages faster than my blackberry.

and about being a real competitor…..did u read on how many units were sold on release day?

the ONLY 1 thing I dont like about the iphone is bluetooth, unable to send and recieve files from other people, but giving the fact that to put songs on in the 1st place u hav to sync with itunes or ssh into it, i can imagine that being a hard task to acomplish.

anyways, thats my rant, I dont usualy (ever i think) comment on web reviews and the such but im at work and im bored and im sick of people dissing everything, if u dont like something, speak to people who dont like it, if u do like something, speak to people who do like it.

p.s. im unsure why ur complaining about paying for an upgrade, windows 98….windows 2000…..windows xp…..the list goes on…

obviously another iphone hater, unsure why its mentioned as “a piece of crap” to be honest, does everything i need to and more, SSH, VPN, VNC, FTP/HTTP+SSL, POP3/IMAP/SMTP etc, AppStore, Cydia ;) youtube, camera, Google Maps with AGPS support, tonnes of console emulators, oh yea and an iPod, the list goes on.

I am by far not a fan boy of anything, Windows Vista for Dx10, GNU/Linux for most day to day personal use and work, Apple for iPod/iPhone, i like to keep a broad mind about things, but people like u just either seem to like to anoy people or just comment meaninglessly about things they personally dont like, hey it wouldnt suprise me if there was an ihate-iphone website or something….can it get any sadder…PERSONAL PREFERENCE!

  • “Woah, say it ain’t soooo,
    You’re love is a heartbreaker.
    Woah, say it ain’t soooo-oo-oooo,
    My drug is a life-taker . . .”

  • It even HAS a keyboard? Sounds like a bug not a feature. I used an iPaq with a keyboard before I bought my 1st gen iphone last July. Id rather stab my eye out then go back to a keyboarded device. Im enjoying my iPhone 3G that I got yesterday. Got to the Apple store an hour away from my house at 6:30 in the morning. First in line! Picked up the white one and have a white case around it. Go iPhone!

  • Be careful with the invisishield and bestskin products. I used an invisishield and while applying it, I pulled it up to adjust and it pulled my silver apple logo right off.

    • hmm…..the logo on the back of the 3g iphone is metal, flush with the casing so i dont see how the logo could be pulled off….not too sure on the original iphone

  • My MacBook case has tons of cracks likewise. Life is such a bitch.

  • I’m going to use this opportunity to rant on the iphone because i don’t have the money to buy one or i was given a crapberry at work and not an iphone so to all you stupid people who bought one i’m glad the thing cracked.

  • The back of the 3g iPhone is plastic. The logo is stenciled on using some kind of metallic paint. I put invisible shield on mine, and so far so good. It didn’t quite lay down on all of the corners though, which is annoying.

  • How about buying a silicone case? My iPhone is 3 months old, not a mark.

    waa waa

  • Had a crack on my white 3g and took it into apple today. They took it and gave me a brand new one on the spot no questions! Love that customer service!!

  • The iPhone 3G ha s a plastic backing; after the first iPhone, Apple discovered that a metal backing blocks some of the Cell signal, resulting in fewer Bars… Plastic fixes the problem… :)
