Want to protect your USB devices? This is the Thanko way
by Serkan Toto on August 6, 2008

You can say what you want about Thanko but the Japanese accessory maker never fails to amaze. This time, they came up with a physical padlock [JP] for everything USB: sticks, connector cables, mouses etc. That means a thief would have to work out a 3-digit number code to be able to steal your data or use your valuable hardware.

The low-tech padlock doesn’t offer that much security but at least it’s only $7. People living outside Japan have to hope that Thanko’s will include their newest brainchild in the company’s official English online shop (shipping begins August 16).

When they do, be sure to enter “raremono5″ as a coupon code before the payment to get a 5% discount.

  • Digital Innovations makes a similar (but larger) product called Data Guard. Clips on to the USB just like the thingy above.

I use mine on April 1st, locking the USB cords of coworker’s printers and mice. Usually good for a few chuckles. Have yet to be threatened with physical harm, so I must not be going too far…
