Video: Installing a game onto the Xbox 360 hard drive

One of the many boring announcements made by Microsoft at E3 last month was that, with the next Dashboard update, users will be able to install games to the Xbox 360’s hard drive. This video shows someone doing just that, installing Grand Theft Auto IV to the console’s hard drive. You’ll note at the end how the Xbox still asks you to insert the game disc. That rules out borrowing your friend’s copy of a game and installing it to your Xbox, for now. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some sort of hack within minutes of the Dashboard update’s release.

I must say, seeing the new Dashboard in action fills me with more confidence than all the crummy screenshots I’ve seen had. Sure, it’s a Cover Flow ripoff, but at least it’s a well done ripoff.

  • aww, thought you’d be able to play without the game disc but I guess it’s just like any PC game I suppose.

  • cool i heard theres already a hack that lets you play without the dvd once its installed.free games yay!!

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! I thought it was just download and need no disk!!!!!!

  • sooo what does installing the game actually do ?

    • It just lets the 360 not rev up like crazy when loading the game or anything (saves some spins on the drive itself extending your disc mechanic-y stuff’s lifetime) and shortens load times.

It is annoying when the thing is revving up to like 4 trillion RPMs just to load a game’s intro and also randomly rev up during a game (and heats the air up to like 17,000º around it giving your room an extra heater haha)… so yeah, it helps, but of course, eats the living crap out of your memory (for us 20 gig-ers with lots of downloaded games as seen in the video above: GTAIV = 6.9gigs? Bad news for any sub-Elite owners with the normal hard drive)… but ah well.
