Complaints about the not quite 3G-fast iPhone 3G may be due to issues with the chipset, according to Nomura Securities analyst Richard Windsor. In a research note he wrote:
“We believe that these issues are typical of an immature chipset and radio protocol stack where we are almost certain Infineon is the 3G supplier.”
Users have posted complaints that their new iPhone 3Gs sometimes suffer poor reception and downshift to the EDGE network.
Windsor also reportedly wrote that the problem most likely won’t be solved with firmware updates, which means Apple might have to replace the chips to meet performance promises.
While good news for AT&T that the slowdown isn’t its fault, it could be bad news for Infineon and Apple.

So, is the older iphone more bit rate than the 3g one?
It’s disappointing that Apple even refuse to reply or acknowledge this is an issue. I can see class legal action from users with defective IPhones. It is not good enough for Apple to keep producing defective hardware.
