35-story indoor ski resort planned for Long Island

The official car of Long Island

The Great Indoors? Developers out on Long Island, the fashion capital of the world, plan to build a $2 billion resort, whose crown jewel will be a 35-story ski mountain.

The resort, at Riverhead, which is 75 miles east of New York City (about an 18-hour drive on the LIE), isn’t expected to be open until 2013.

Naturally, environmentalists oppose the deal, arguing that it would ruin the picturesque landscape that is Long Island.

Does the world need a 35-story indoor ski mountain, especially when Vermont or upstate New York aren’t exactly unreachable from New York City?

It’s going where Northrop Grumman currently resides. Right now it’s a big fenced-off field with a warehouse looking building way in the distance. It’s a really quiet area with a cemetery on the other side. I don’t know about the beautiful landscape part, it’s been wasted space for so long. I just don’t want more traffic in that area. And 2 out of 5 neighboring houses has a late 80’s, early 90’s camaro/firebird in their driveway.

I think he was joking about the picturesque landscape on LI.

This would be a good idea except they’re putting it in Long Island. I would rather buy a Gateway running Vista Ultimate than try battling the LIE (on what currently takes an unholy amount of time to cross and is sure to increase with a new resort opening…and the craters that knock your transmission out of gear don’t engender fond memories either).

…although you do get to enjoy the 100,000 decibles of bass being pumped out of countless ‘89 Honda Civics along the way. Always a plus.
