Nikon digital SLR is Europe’s camera of the year

Nikon says their digital SLR D3 has been chosen as Europe’s Camera of the Year 2008-2009 by the European Imaging and Sound Association.

The camera has already won the Camera Grand Prix 2008 award in Japan and the Technical Image Press Association’s Best Professional Digital SLR Camera 2008 award in Europe.

Nikon is actually a late entrant to the market for professional digital SLRs, with the D3 being the company’s first full-frame model.

  • That would be news to professional photographers who have used Nikon DSLRs for years. in fact, before the EOS system took over as king amongst pros, the Nikon D1 was the top of the heap.

Yes, Nikon was late to the full frame table, but they have been doing pro-level DSLRs longer than Canon has. I was using an Associated Press NC2000e (based on a Nikon body) that cost $15,000 in 1997, was 1.3 megapixels and had horrible white balance. Not to mention proprietary disc drives. But the first assignment I did with it (the crowning of Miss Missouri), where I shot the picture, and it was on the front page of the paper in less than 20 minutes, I knew it was the future of news photography.
