Myst coming to iPhone for some reason!

In case you never got to play Myst, which seems unlikely given that it’s one of the most popular games of all time, now’s your chance to do it.

Being a point-and-click game, essentially made in Hypercard, it does lend itself to the iPhone’s simple interface, although as IGN’s recent review of Myst DS indicates, it’s not exactly a small-screen game. Let’s hope they fix the problems and price it right. How much would you pay for a game that’s approaching 20 years old and has been superceded in every way?

  • Is there anyone on the planet who hasn’t played this already?

  • I started playing but never beat it, 8 year old me had very little patience. If I had an iPhone and they were charging say $5-7 for it I would probably pick it up.

  • I never played any Myst game… always wanted to though.

  • Okay, so maybe there are a few people. It is (was?) a great game. I suppose that if it came out for the iPhone it would get a few hundred thousand people to buy it, but I think it would really have to work a little to make it translate – as I remember, it’s not the sort of thing that one can play casually for 10-20 minutes (hence Riles’ impatience) so it might not work so well in the casual gaming market. And Devin’s point about translating on the small screen makes a lot of sense – graphics were a big part of the first game, even if they were VGA. If they can’t get that same richness on the iPhone screen, that’s going to cut down on enjoyment quite a bit. It’d be nice if there were some haptic feedback on the iPhone too, so that if you mouseover (fingerover) something that can be manipulated it would let you know. But that’s not possible on an iPhone. Maybe this would be better for the Instinct…
