Yamaha is finally shipping the Bodibeat, an MP3 player that matches music tempo to the steps of a user’s walk or run.

Billed as a “total workout tracking and personal music solution” the Bodibeat comes with a heart rate monitor that clips to your ear and software that categorizes each song by beats per minute. The device has four operating modes: Free, Fitness, Training and Music. In Free mode Bodibeat matches music to a user’s exercise pace, while Training helps a user know when to speed up or slow down based on the music playing. In Music its just a plain old portable audio player.

While the device promises to be “ergonomically designed for ease-of-use during active pursuits” it only has 512 MB of storage.

The Bodibeat is available now for a suggested retail price of $299.99.
