A “reliable source” who has nailed some things before (okay, it’s just a little bird) hears on the grapevine that come the 23rd of September, there’s going to be a sub-$1000 touchscreen-based Mac dropping on us. Not only that, but 10-bit HDMI out from the GPU, great for hi-def buffs (probably not on the <$1K rig). Not going too far out on a limb, but let's still treat it like the filthy, contemptible rumor it is and not propagate it.
What do you guys think? I’m down for a touchscreen. I’m upgrading this month, so I think I’m biased towards the hopeful side.

I don’t buy that there will ever be a sub thousand dollar Mac, let alone a sub thousand dollar Mac tablet.
Now, now…
How about you don’t buy that there will ever be a sub thousand dollar Mac worth having. There’s something I can agree with.
a Mac Mini is under $1000. Also, most people don’t expect the Mac tablet will be a speedy machine. I’m looking for a tablet that has Mac OS X with touch screen interface that I will use during travel.
Here we go again with the BS. I remember that before the MacBook Air was introduced it was rumored to have all sorts of specialized hardware and when it was finally revealed it had less hardware than anyone would want to imagine. It was thin and light alright because it was stripped of nearly everything just to get it into a manila folder. The MacMini is another low-powered computer that is basically what the AppleTV should really be. If this new machine comes with an HDMI output, my jaw would hit the ground.
Apple is great at manufacturing form over function. Giving users just the barest amount to get things done.
Awesome!
i’ll take anything from apple that is sub $1000 and is portable to do mobile development for the iphone.

If it happens, it’s going to make make all these netbooks look ancient.
If the screen is pressure sensitive this could be better than buying the wacom graphics pad/ display and connecting it to the pc. As a pc user this might finally be a reason to switch if this is a tablet you can draw on.
