Ok, now come on. Web-controlled door locks? Oh, Schlage, tell me it’s not true. It is? Your LiNK system is great you say? Ok, well, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt for your Z-Wave home automation technology. Being able to wirelessly control temperature, lighting and even the pool certainly sounds cool.

I see, so the Z-Wave “Bridge” plugs into an Ethernet port on the household Internet router, which enables me to control all these things. It certainly is nice that the devices communicate using RF signals encrypted using AEC 128-bit protocols. Oh, and the web portal uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protection. Hmm… I feel safer already.
Hey, I’m even cool with the $12.99 monthly charge for access to the LiNK online portal. (Not to mention the $300 door lock). All that is fine, but I’d like to get into my house now. It seems the batteries in my door lock are dead. (Yes, I know, I see the keyhole and input pad too – I’m just saying is all).

OK, scenario
I live in one area, have a small vacation house in another area.
can I control the thermostat (wintertime, want to keep it off if above freezing, but turn it on if below freezing), turn on/off lights (security), read temperature, through the compputer/internet?
thansk
Yes you can do all that, but…
you’re taking a risk by turning off thermostat entirely, in case you forgot or too busy and then temperature falls deep freeze then the pipes burst.
There will be marginal difference in savings when setting the thermostat to 60 OR keeping it off all the time except when it’s below freezing.
devrim,
thanks for reply.
Understood, risky for it to be off; i am actually just looking at whether this can be done or not; since feasible, I could leave thermostat on, etc, etc.
problem, oil tank in rural area is about 600.00 to fill, in an old energy inefficient house, that is not occupied a lot.
consideration to have electric heaters in basement, near water system, to keep from freezing, and have hte upstairs thermostat off, unless subfreezing, etc.
again, just investigating the options : – )
