After tuition, books and other expenses, does the average high school or college student have a thousand bucks to spend on a portable computer? Perhaps not.
But they may be able to find up to $500 for a small and scrappy netbook, rather than a $1000 notebook.

This probably isn't the best place to post the following questions, but I thought someone here might either be willing to give me a few pointers or direct me to an appropriate forum...

I've been thinking of buying a netbook but am confused by memory. On a conventional desktop or laptop, the hard drive (for storage) and memory are two separate items, of course. But I just read, "Many netbooks use flash memory, rather than hard drives, for program and data storage." (I assume this is what is referred to as a flash-based solid-drive, or SSD.)

So I guess I have three general questions...

1. If a computer uses flash memory in lieu of a hard drive, does that same flash memory serve as the computer's memory, or does it have a flash drive AND a separate memory?

In other words, are the hard drive (or disk) and memory always separate on netbooks, or can they be one and the same?

2. Next, I understand that netbooks use different kinds of memory, including DRAM, SRAM and Flash. Can someone give me a brief overview of the advantages and disadvantages of each?

3. I've seen references to "Flash sticks" and other apparently detachable memory devices. Can anyone give me a general idea of how this works? I assume no computer can be booted unless it has a hard drive or disk and some kind of memory, right? If so, then do these Flash memory sticks and related gadgets merely add extra memory?

Thanks!

I wouldn't make that assumption. The two netbooks I've owned are also the two hottest computers I've owned.

One other (assumed) advantage of the lower-power, smaller netbooks: they won't cook your junk as quickly. However, I did read a review about the Dell Mini 9 getting surprisingly hot.

Personally waiting for the Lenovo Ideadpad S10. Hoping they offer a Linux version, otherwise I need some guidance on how to get the Windows Tax charges reversed (say, that sounds like a good story for a tech blog!).

I have one on order from Lenovo and the estimated ship date still reads Sep 9th, though I've read many reports that I'm gonna be disappointed when it doesn't actually ship that day.

The best notebook deal going, right now, is the one Best Buy has on the Dell Inspiron 13.

699 for a 13" model with 3GB RAM, 250GB HD, and a C2D 2.0GHz processor. All of this in a, small, five pound package. If I was a student, this would be the ideal machine. It's got a large enough screen to get things done and it's small and light enough to cart around everywhere.

Agreed, but it's not officially been released yet. It'll be definitely be one to watch, though. It's supposed to be shipping in "early October" assuming everything goes as planned.

Why no mention of the Lenovo S10? 10" screen, XP, 80(?) GB hard drive, all right around $400. And Lenovo has a great track record making portable computers.

The best thing about the MSI Wind is that it is fairly painless to get Mac OSX 10.5.2 up and running on it. The OS86X community has hammered out a good majority of the bugs associated with it (mainly the graphics) and it's actually quite Mac friendly. All in all, for a student that is looking to both experiment and have a solid little computer, that is the best choice out of this entire list.
