New Britax Advocate car seat will come with built-in airbags
by Matt Burns on September 10, 2008

Generally, we’re not into childcare gadgets here. It’s not that kids are cool — my kid is amazing — it’s just that there generally isn’t anything innovative or crunchy about ‘em. Then Britax announces that its next high-end car seat is going to have side-deploying air bags and it throws our world up in a tussle. What else sweet gear have we missed in the toddle world? Anyway, the details on the car seat are slim right now, but apparently, the seat is only 1/2 bigger than the non-air bag model (that’s the one I have for my boy) and the system works well. If more info flouts our way, we’ll let you know. Oh, a video would be great….need to find a video of it in baby-saving action…

  • So THIS is what you sacrificed for a frozen Red Bull?!

  • How many pounds of force would be used? What happens if the child isn’t properly harnessed? If the parent doesn’t get the harness snug, what could happen to the child? This seems like a big risk.

  • The are not pyrotechnic airbags of the type found in cars. They are essentially air-filled rubber cushions that absorb energy as they compress.

    I will see about a video…

  • As stated above, these are NOT deploying air bags, but energy-absorbing cushions. They’re actually a good idea for those concerned about children sitting in car seats on outboard (not middle) back seats)
Here’s from the national Child Passenger Safety listserve:
?his is Side Impact Cushion Technology™ - they are not deployable air bags that require activation - in the event of a side impact the side impact cushion will compress absorbing and distributing external crash forces. Because the side impact cushions provide the child seat exterior with a soft energy-absorbing surface, they will serve to protect the adjacent passenger from being injured by the child seat.
