I started this article expecting to laugh and laugh about how some big analyst thinks the iPhone is a minor player, but in fact he makes a few points. Because of Apple’s reticence (or inability) to release the phone to the clamoring masses in Korea, Malaysia, and so on, other players have jumped at the opportunity, and are reaping the benefits.
It’s easy to forget that the US is just a medium-sized piece of the world mobile business pie. You see lots of iPhones on the streets but no Instincts, no Vus, no Dares. In places like Seoul it’s the other way around. The significant presence of companies like Samsung and Sony Ericsson there means they’re quicker to market and now in fact already control three quarters of the world touchsceen phone market. Now you know! And knowing is half the battle.

To be honest…if you thought differently it means you’ve never been to Asia. Not to mention the iPhone is a well documented piece of crap when it comes to the actual phone part of it.
Dude, think about how many people have never even left their damn home town..
I don’t understand, why is that a bad thing?
Why is not leaving behind the neighborhood you grew up in a bad thing?
Why does the youth/geek culture nowadays seem to completely want to distance themselves from their family, roots, culture, etc?
Not to go off on a tangient….. what does this have to do with the iPhone? If anything, the iPhone is probably the most famous and recognaziable iPhone, people who don’t research their phones, if that is what you are implying, would probably pick a iPhone over others.
Well, and this is just my personal opinion, but limiting the scope of what you actually see and experience limits your understanding of the world. I never said anything about completely distancing oneself from one’s culture, but if all you care to comprehend is your local world, then your comprehension is incomplete and biased.
You say the iPhone is probably the most famous and recognizable phone – but what about the RAZR? what about the LG and Samsung phones that have sold 100x as many in Tokyo, where they see the iPhone as a step backwards? There’s a whole world out there and it may not care quite as much for the iPhone as you think – this is not an insult to the iPhone, it’s just the way it is.
quoting GI Joe isn’t going to stop the Fanboyz for hating on you for this one
Maybe if I throw some Voltron in there….
i hate you.
Nokia 370: Form feet and legs!
Att Tilt: Form arms and body!
iPhone: And i’ll form, the head!
The iPhone is not officially available where I live, but many people are acquiring it. iPhones are pretty crippled here, with lack of 3G, no local Google Maps support and other such features, but hey, iPhone!
Only after the iPhone was introduced here have I started seeing Blackberries in businessmen’s hands and billboards advertising HTC handsets and other high-end smartphones. (iMate pieces were previously prevalent)
Hardly anybody in this day and age never leaves their hometown then, many do it daily just to get to work.
And RAZR is all but forgotten by now, its underpowered and nobody cares about it anymore, and just because the iPhone is the most recognized does not mean it is the best phone, its just the most recognized by the majority.
I actually hate the iPhone, I have an Att Tilt and owuld much rather prefer a WinMo device than the iPhone.
My point is the iPhone is just a lot more famous and seen as the “cool” gadget. I mean, look at those Windows vs Mac commercials, they are basically the Mac guy being an asshole to the PC and being the “cool image” guy.
