Connect your iPhone to your computer right now to start downloading the just-released 2.1 firmware. This is the big one that’s supposed to fix all sorts of bugs and performance issues. It’ll take a little bit to determine how effective it is, though.
Apple lists the following improvements:
• Decrease in call set-up failures and dropped calls
• Significantly better battery life for most users
• Dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
• Improved email reliability, notably fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
• Faster installation of 3rd party applications
• Fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes for users with lots of third party applications
• Improved performance in text messaging
• Faster loading and searching of contacts
• Improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
• Repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
• Option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts
• Genius playlist creation
Let us know how the update goes for you.

“Improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display” ?
I wonder if this actually means “shows more bars for the same crappy signal” -_-

Can something be wrong with my jesus phone cuz i just doubled checked at the ATT website and the area where i live should have good 3G service… plus my room is on the third floor in my house.. should that get me better reception? Im confused.

Actually the update says NOTHING about increased signal strength. Just better accuracy at determining what signal you ALREADY HAVE. Ugh.

I updated and I’m already seeing improvements. I can’t speak to the battery life (which is what has me most excited) but the 3G seems more solid and things are just a little snappier all around. App installation via 3G was super quick, backup was noticably improved, contacts no longer lag… all the improvements they say are there seem to be.

Yes! Finally, an iPhone 3g I love as much as that 1.x iPhone 2G I bought all that time ago. You have to have this update - it makes the iPhone work the way it was originally designed to.
