EVERYTHING is snappier with 2.1, SMS, Safari, opening applications, closing applications, everything is faster. 2.1 fixes call quality and signal strength. 2.1 is a huge improvement and the fact that you don't notice it is a little ridiculous. Even without having anything to sync. And a pretty large amount of users had those kind of problems with sync times. 2.1 fixes all that, so it's actually a pretty big deal. It takes the phone from being unreliable, sluggish and problematic, to the phone it should have been at launch.
