HTC Dream’s “Late October” release date is…
- September 16th, 2008

A little birdy just dropped by CrunchGear HQ, bringing tidings of HTC Dream release dates in his little bird-sized satchel. They further confirmed the September 23rd announcement, cemented the rumors that there will be 3 different colors (all signs point to black, white, and brown), and then mentioned one little special tid-bit: the release date.
If all goes as tentatively planned, we’ll see the first Android powered handset hit the retail space on October 20th. That puts it on a Monday, meaning I’ll probably be sent to sleep on the sidewalk outside of the T-Mo store all weekend. Hurray!

That is really sad that T-Mobile is going to be the first carrier to go to market with an Android device. I’ll let AT&T slide since they’re focused on gaining marketshare through the iPhone and don’t want to cannibalize those sales. But Verizon and Sprint should be completely embarrassed by this very significant missed opportunity.
Props to T-Mobile for making a power move!

AT&T and Verizon don’t want to just swing the doors open so Google can waltz right into their industry. They’re going to make them work for it. Did you really expect them to just lay everything down and support Google?
T-Mobile and Sprint are the first adapters because they need an ADVANTAGE. They’ll use Android as an edge to lure customers from Verizon and AT&T.
Then, if Android ends up being everything its claimed to be, they’ll give the HTC, LG and Samsung’s of the world a call and tell them to make the best Android device the planet has ever seen.
Really… this isn’t a surprise.

I definitely look forward to reading more about the phone. I’m sure Google will build a great system, but I’m curious to see what all it will be able to do. It has a nice sized keyboard, it seems like that would be a good business-minded person’s feature.

I can’t wait to watch the lemmings run after this first gen device. It will suck…just as the 2nd gen iPhone does. I’d like to know the real stats on how bad the service is for the iPhone.
When I asked a friend yesterday who he liked his iPhone? He said “Great until I left the store?”

I am an unfortunate owner of a 3G iPhone, nice looking toy but should never be compared to a real phone… there are way too many functions that are missing on the iPhone… but Steve J must figure we don’t need them.. I now use my old w880i

Today at Google Developer Day 2008 in London’s Wembley Stadium, Mike Jennings (Android developer advocate) did a demo of what he claims is the first Android device ever to be shown in public in Europe. It was a HTC device, looking very much like the one in the photo above. He did not allow anyone else to touch it or look at it from close range.

Still waiting for a touchscreen with no keyboard.

Touchscreens make typing and messaging painfully difficult. They look cool and work great for view images but that’s about it.

I’m chomping at the bit for this phone!
My contract with TMO is over and I’m now on a month to month waiting for this device.
I’ll give TMO another two year contract to get this phone at a discounted price.
I also heard that this phone will be offered first to existing customers.
That qualifies me.
This phone is pretty mundane looking.
Hopefully, it will perform better than it looks.

A very important fact, is that Google will not share revenue with Android developers. ALL revenue will go to these developers!! I think that this, combined with the slow - but unavoidable - realization that Android is MUCH more than what some bone-headed analysts STILL call the gphone, will create a lot of enthusiasm…
Developers will want to create for an open platform (compared to the walled-gardens of the iphone), AND take all the revenue..
