The skinny: Internet provider Wayport is allowing Zune WiFi access in more than 9,800 McD’s restaurants.
Sounds great with the social networking and WiFi Marketplace, but Zune owners, would you ever view this access as something more than a novelty?

It’ll probably come and go just like McDonald’s free Nintendo DS WiFi service, which they canceled back in… I think June?
I’m pretty excited to see the Zune finally take some strides to compete. I’m downloading the 3.0 update now. I really hope this make the wireless more useful than it has been until now.
Include free internet access to purchase music just like the Kindle has done for ebooks and I think that might be something worth talking about. Why mess around with getting a fast food franchise to give free wifi access when you can do so much more?
Wifi is the next logical step from a wired connection, but it’s very limiting, you have to be in such a small area to use it. If you go on the road, no more wifi.
Here’s my real issue – Why is Microsoft trying to do little things to somehow magically catch up to the iPod? You should leap beyond the iPod and give users something of value instead of just trying to copy them.
To me, this is the same thing as Microsoft trying to compete with Sony’s Blu-ray format. Sure, go ahead, you can dance with Sony for a few songs, but the next move will probably involve a media format that doesn’t have moving parts, aka streaming. Microsoft should make an MP3 player 10 times better than the iPod, not just try to mimic it and grab a few percentages points of market share.
What the hell are you talking about? Don’t type drunk next time dude!
“You should leap beyond the iPod and give users something of value instead of just trying to copy them.” – I’ve never heard or seen a wireless enabled ipod that does what zune is trying to do.
“Microsoft trying to compete with Sony’s Blu-ray format” – Have I been living under a rock? I doubt MS ever tried competing with blue-ray format. Toshiba did and got the ass kicked.
“Sure, go ahead, you can dance with Sony for a few songs, but the next move will probably involve a media format that doesn’t have moving parts, aka streaming.” – Hasn’t MS been doing streaming with asf and wm formats for ages?
“Microsoft should make an MP3 player 10 times better than the iPod, not just try to mimic it and grab a few percentages points of market share.” – Mimic what? The ability to play music?
Where the hell are you coming from? Go see a doc soon! weirdo!
“Have I been living under a rock? I doubt MS ever tried competing with blue-ray format. ”
That was an analogy – my point was that they should do something to go beyond what consumers perceive the iPod as. There’s a reason why the iPod is what most people think of when they hear something about MP3 players.
“Hasn’t MS been doing streaming with asf and wm formats for ages?”
Yes, the whole world has, but who brought it to the masses? MP3 players had been around for a while, why did the iPod become the one that everyone wanted and purchased? They did things to make this happen, and with a little bit of luck, it was a very successful product line.
Ive just downloaded the new Zune 3 software and let me get this straight… I can connect to my wireless router and sync my zune but cant surf the net?? Am I missing an application or can this seriously not be used for net browsing?
Can someone please explain…?
Thanks
Why can’t they just build a damn browser and let us access the net with WIFI?
Microsoft: I don’t give a damn about your online store or sharing with other Zune users, I just want to check my email and surf the net. Stop crippling our WIFI capabilities out of greed…
