I got this for my mother in a nursing home who cannot hear. A laptop would be difficult for her and this works great so far. Wish it was a little larger.

Just bought 3 classics at $7.47 in the Target clearance area. They can be upgraded for $40 to be Prontos. Pretty decent deal. Bad news is that here in the south part of Chapel Hill, NC, the TMobile data coverage map notwithstanding, there is no signal. So I'm going to have to drive around looking for a signal and wondering if wherever I go I'll be able to get reception. (DC and NYC in the next few weeks, for example.) Hope it works, but for the money it's hardly a disaster if it doesn't. I own an LG Lotus and my wife has an iPhone, but we both wanted a back-up system that holds a charge and is there even if our other devices lose battery power. Time will tell if this is the right choice.

I just purchased two for $50 each (my wife and I) and getting ready to do the software upgrade, making it compatible with the new Pronto, and guess what, I'm saving a ton of money. The cell companies are to greedy with their bundles of talk, email, and text... The email and text work flawless on the Peek.

also, the 5mb is not true. It's 8mb. You're not using it for all those GPS directions or thousands of contacts on your phone: it's an email device for crying out loud! That's a lot of space for your messages. Even with text, that's still lots of space for your inbox! What do you want, a 100mb inbox that will never fill up?

I wouldn't say that if I were you. Most cellphone companies these days force you to buy a voice plan costing at least $20 then adding the bundles (like text messaging) you want. For people who wouldn't talk a lot, it's a complete waste of money. Also, note that this review is a VERY old one, about half a year ago! Now they even include unlimited text messaging all for the same price. However, they also decreased the price of the Peek (most likely due to the upcoming Peek Pronto this April) to only $50. Now that's a grabber. You should note that the Peek says not to remove the SIM card or voiding warranty. That's because you're not supposed to in the first place. It doesn't work with any other SIM card except for the one already inside it.

Drums! Maybe if it was a good beat..
I get a 3g unlimited data plan for $29 a month. I paired it with a used HTC TYTN II. This device is crap. Maybe for those who don't know technology, but they also make a big button cell phone that even has a dialtone for $.75 a minute or something redic. I picked up a peek at a used store for $10 US. I plan on taking out the integrated SIM and adding in my own with a 500MB data plan for $14.99/month. I can simply take the sim back out and use it in another device, so no losses there.

Cmon'. $20 a month for less than 5mb of data a month on average? I wish wireless companies would be more service oriented and leave the devices to the manufacturers.

Count me in! I have Asperger's sydrome, a form of autism. I HATE to talk on the phone and merely use my cell phone as a text device, and won't even answer the phone. Many people who prefer text over talk are going to LOVE this! Good bye cellphone, I don't want you anymore. This would also be fabulous for the low-budget deaf.

Families with teens who can't afford a cell phone with all the "bells and whistles" will find this a godsend. I'm afraid to buy it though because I know there will be several upgrades making this device way better.

Yes I just turned the volume down. The drum beat on the vid WAS annoying as heck. Consider yourself scolded LOL. Many times! ha ha

so it will show jpg's but no other attachments? Email is so integrated with hyperlinks and attachments that a pure text device just isn't useful for me. No way I'd pay $20/month for the service.

I'm a bit of a fan, too. What limits its appeal for me is the lack of some advanced email functions like custom folders and IMAP. Those two things alone would make it a killer app for voice-free mobile email; IM would be another obvious step, and could even be handled by some kind of email-IM network converter at Peek's end, perhaps.

I couldn't make it through the video because of that drum loop. I guess I should have taken my meds first.

I do agree that they probably could have easily squeezed a bare bones browser of some sort on that thing. If it makes it to a 2nd generation I bet we will see that....
