Did you know that movies purchased from the PS3’s video service can only be re-downloaded once, and that’s only with the assistance of Sony? Oh, it’s true. It’s damn true. (Get it?)

An Ars Technica reader deleted a movie from his PS3’s hard drive in order to free up some space. When he went to re-downloaded the movie, he discovered that he couldn’t. A phone call to Sony eventually fixed the problem, but with a sobering warning: users are only allowed once such re-download per account. If, for whatever reason, the user in question deleted the movie again, he wouldn’t be able to re-download it again. One and done.

The moral of the story is, be sure you keep track of your video downloads. That, and that DRM can be, and of often is, extraordinarily annoying.

  • Is understandable why Sony will do this to stop piracy.

  • Hey ivan, good to see you? not! this is because sony is still pushing blu gay, not downloads, if sony had it thier way they would not even offer movie downloads! piracy??? on ps3 are you kidding me?? the only people that got piracy right is microsoft 360! try getting anything off of the hdd to work on pc? you can pirate the hell out of the ps3!! make no mistake about it, the ps3 is all about blu gay first and formost, the crappy games line up even shows this!

  • @patima

But don’t you have to through worste with the Xbox?

The Xbox has been pirated left and right so don’t even. It’s a strip down version of Windows 2000 and people have cracked it.

I agree with Ivan_PSP. This is done to prevent Piracy. Just get a 300GB drive for $100 and then buy your movies.

  • What a waste of internet space. So if I go to a store a purchase a dvd for approximatly $24.99. Take it home watch it and it breaks or gets thrown away. Can I go back to the store and get another… Hell no!! I’m stuck buying another. So… I find it perfectly reasonable to be limited to only 1 RE-download. Manage your downloads correctly and if you don’t have the space… upgrade your harddrive it’s not hard. Or you can just buy the dvd/blu-ray and have the physical media. Just my opinion though

  • I don’t get why PS3 owners always complain about Xbox 360 extra costs, when they will eventually need a bigger HD in order to get most of their games installed. I really think the $150 for a 120GB it’s just not right (Here in Mexico it’s even more expensive), but I also think that getting another HD is an extra cost as well that every PS3 owner will have if they want to really use all what PS3 has to offer and having the installs as well.

  • @jham

I got a 250GB HD for only $89. I dont know where you got 150….

  • Sony would rather you buy them instead of renting them, nothing more! and movies on blu ray can`t be burned as well either? hmm… yeah sony is good at anti-piracy, for everthing invented thier is a way to crack, microsoft made a little harder than sony, you can even install another o.s. on ps3 right out of the box, man you can`t even browse the web with xbox, so it takes a little more knowledge than most to fool around with xbox. xcept ivanpsp, we all know he is the lord and master of all things. lol
