Hands-on with the T-Mobile G1 Android phone

Here’s a few minutes with the new G1. We didn’t get a chance to really dig into it because, let’s face it, you saw how impatient I got. Everyone else was waiting too. At any rate, I like the G1 and I’m gonna get one. I don’t care if I’m the only person in the world that buys one, I just want to be able to write my own apps without a lot of hassle. Stay tuned for my first app: Pants-o-rometer. It’s going to use the G1’s accelerometer and GPS chip to tell you A) whether or not someone’s pulled down your pants and B) whether or not you’re likely in a public area. Yeah, I know!

The more I see these clips, the less I’m sold.
The hardware is very vanilla. Why they didn’t cram this into a Touch Pro body is beyond me.
The software, while somewhat pretty, doesn’t seem to offer anything radically new. But, I realize the real promise here isn’t in pretty. It’s how easy it’s going to be to develop for the platform.
The fact that it’s open is great, but they need to get this thing to spread like wildfire. There needs to be builds of this software for every model of phone, existing hardware included, that has the specs to run it. They need to blow the doors off this bitch so anyone with a Windows Mobile device can get rid of their OS and give MS, and whoever their carrier may be, the finger.
This should be step one to taking the carriers out of the equation and turning our phones in mobile PCs.

After my first sentence, you may thing I’m not sold on Android. I should clarify. In summary:
I’m sold on the software.
I think the hardware is lame.
I hope it spreads, and spreads quickly.

Two cameras used: In the first half of the video, a Kodak Zi6 and in the second half, a Flip Mino. Just in case you’re wondering what to avoid purchasing if you need to do a lot of close-up shots.

The hardware is FANTASTIC, its the same perfect layout as the Sidekick has, same great keyboard. You can’t compare this to an iPhone because the iPhone has no features! The iPhone is a piece of jewelry or something, its certainly not used by anyone that uses their phone for mail or iming or anything other than calling. No, this phone can only be compared to a laptop computer (hiptop) and when you bring up the iPhone you just show that you don’t know what you’re talking about.
