Chinese iPhone 3G: No 3G, no Wi-Fi, will make you hungry for another iPhone 30 minutes later

This might as well be the Chinese iPhone
According to the South China Morning Post, an analyst, Calvin Huang, is reporting that the iPhone 3G will ship in China without W-CDMA and Wi-Fi. The report states simply that both functions will be turned off, W-CDMA because the carrier will be using TD-SCDMA, a Chinas 3G standard and Wi-Fi because they want the phone to suck.

I’d suggest taking this with a grain of turmeric because, as we all know, the South China Morning Post is prone to making outlandish pronouncements such as the time when they suggested that “The revolution, and the recognition of class and class struggle, are necessary for peasants and the Chinese people to overcome both domestic and foreign enemy elements. This is not a simple, clean, or quick struggle” and that “The people’s army is not merely an organ for fighting; it is also an organ for the political advancement of the Party, as well as of production of knock-off iPhones.” This is either a move by Apple to essentially hobble the phone in China or Calvin is wrong.

Well, I’m reading from Shanghai, so it hasn’t been yet. Oh, and I won’t be buying if this story is correct. 3G is one thing, but no wi-fi would be totally unacceptable.

You know this won’t happen in China if you live there. They’d sell none. Besides, I was in Shanghai earlier in the year before the 3G and loads of ppl already had an iPhone. So Apple would only hurt their own legit sales in the region if they offer sub standard products. That said, perhaps they want to restrict the wi-fi in lieu of trying to sell more notebooks rather than have the majority of ppl use their cell phones in wi-fi havens. On a side note…perhaps they are equally worried that a lot of people will use hotspots but not buy anything at the cafe, etc.
