Apple’s quest for total handheld domination is limited by AT&T and so swirling rumors about a CDMA iPhone has to have some truth to them. It isn’t like Apple to be tied down to one distribution channel like the current iPhone, but that’s the way the cell phone biz works here in the States. According to a 9to5Mac Verizon insider, we could see a CDMA iPhone as early as Macworld 2009. The rumor isn’t new and Verizon initially was going to get the jesusphone, but after some negotiations deteriorated, Apple sought out AT&T. This is still a rumor but if Apple is serious about controlling the handheld market, it has to penetrate different markets and reach a more broad customer base; Verizon is the next, logical step.

Wasn’t it just a few weeks ago that we saw a story about At&t locking the iPhone down until 2010?
This isnt even remotely accurate. If Im not mistaken, ATT has a 5 year exclusivity with the iPhone.
The last we heard, it’ until 2010.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/01/atandt-iphone-exclusivity-extended-to-2010/
doesn’t mean they can’t announce it.
This is true AT&T has a 5 year exclusive on it. Apple will wait to hit the other markets.
The rumors about AT&T having a 5 year exclusivity deal are just that… rumors. No one from Apple or AT&T have confirmed the length of their exclusive deal (and why would AT&T announce “Hey, buy the phone from us and pay us for service… or wait until January and get it from Verizon”?). We also don’t know the conditions of the exclusivity deal (maybe AT&T has to meet certain revenue goals and it just isn’t doing it). An iPhone on a different carrier is not so far fetched
I’m with Verizon, I’ve wanted an iPhone since release. VZW has been getting better in the past snatching up the Storm, Dare, and LG Voyager, But they’re still lacking in the quality products. I refuse to lose Verizon’s customer service, low cost of plans, and over all superior coverage just to be cool to have an iPhone. But, if they ever did get it, I would immediately sell my phone and buy one.
I would never switch just for iPhone, even though the iPhone is the number one phone I want. It just all boils down to every aspect of AT&T sucks. I could go into detail, but I’m to drunk.
I just got off the phone with a att rep and he said the contract was over jan 1 2009 and they are not renewing it…
Hey its 5 months after january 1, 2009 and i don’t see the iphone on verizon, contraire a new iphone came out with AT&T
It could happen. They could come out with another one that goes around the AT&T contract. Just like the lg rumor with sprint and the lg scoop with alltel. They could make one for Verizon and go through att loop holes.
wait you said was over 2009 hasnt even come yet
I dont understand why everyone seems to forget this happens alllllllllll the time with cell phones. A phone always launches exclusively with one provider than 4-6 months, maybe even a year (or a couple years later in this case) it launches with another carrier. chill out people… we’ll all have our iphones soon enough.
Excellent point about the iPhone nano. That would be fuckin badass.
It don’t happen every time look at the sidekick with T-mobile, sidekick existed since the late 90’s and its still with T-mobile.
dude i hav verizon n dat would soo kick ass if they came out wit a iphone for verizon i soo would totaly fukn buy dat phone !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
the iphone is nice and all but i would rather spend the money on something like the HTC Touch Pro
Doesn’t the HTC Touch Pro run on a Windows Mobile platform? Seriously? You’d want that junk over an iPhone?
Dude, get a life, it is sad that you could ever compare mac to microsoft, The only things mac has going for them is morons who need a simple computer, and the fact they have the iphone and ipods. Microsoft eats Mac alive at everything else. Their os is superior, The mac os much like the iphone os just has a “pretty” ui, the features for the most part are useless eyecandy type features, does anyone really need the “genie” effect when minimizing a browser???? Also, who the hell with brains wants to have to attach and external hdd to their mac when they can put it in their tower, or how about the inconvenience of having to drag a crap Mac to the apple store any and everytime something breaks because you cannot slide off the side of the case and just fix or replace components yourself??? Seriously, back up your ridiculously pointless strike on microsoft when it is so evident they are a juggernaut in almost everything they touch, I can’t wait to see the iphone/mac fanboys face when microsoft drops a touchscreen smartphone unannounced and it OWNS the iphone. And mark my words, It will happen!
True dat!
Apple fanboys suck! Iphone doesnt even have copy / paste feature after all the fixes and 3G version of the phone. First Apple needs get simple features of a PDA phone into Iphone but for now its just a pretty IPOD which you cant even add more memory.
You guys have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. I am a technologist, I use every platform available. Currently: Windows (2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista and 7), Linux (redhat Unbutu and Debian) MAC (OS 10.4 and 10.5).
And I have been at this for a long time. It is my job to do so. And I am very good at my job. I do have to say that windows does not come anywhere close to the performance and superiority of Mac OS X. And as far as hardware goes Dell can’t touch apple either.
Talk about Fanboys. Again I hated Apple products most of my life. MAC os was a joke, up until OS X. And really that didn’t get good until 10.3.9 10.4 was much better, and after the bugs got worked out 10.5 rocks.
Vista was a joke release. Windows 7 is looking better. But again. They don’t touch apple. So take your fan boy comments and put them to better use. Apple computers have also outsold PC’s by percentage of previous market share for the past 3 years, and this year was more than double last.
Microsoft has been trying to get a smart phone out for years, but they cannot get past their lack of style.
does anyone really need the “genie” effect when minimizing a browser????
Smart guy….you can turn that off.
I can’t wait to see the iphone/mac fanboys face when microsoft drops a touchscreen smartphone unannounced and it OWNS the iphone. And mark my words, It will happen!
You mean like the zune owned the iPod? You are a tool.
Both mac and microsoft have its up and downs, but microsoft just have too many downs
yeah like microsoft did with the zune yeah sure came out swinging with that junk lol
Good one, but the zune is actually a pretty good product.
One of the better things that MS released.
“Good one, but the zune is actually a pretty good product.
One of the better things that MS released.”
But not an iPod killer….
I talked an Apple Insider, and they said that AT&T has the iPhone until 2012. The only way Apple can get the iPhone onto the EVDO coverage of Verizon, is if they release a new iPhone. So they could basically release the iPhone 3G, but call it the iPhone EVDO, and then AT&T can’t do anything about it. Just as a side note, one of the reasons that Apple wasn’t happy with Verizon, was because they wanted the Verizon logo to be printed somewhere on the phone which most Apple designers said would “detract from the pure beauty of the phone.”
Another major reason for Verizon not getting the iPhone first is they wanted to handle all support for there product, and did not want apple to be involved in the customer support.
WOW YALL ARE ALL CRAZY!!!!!¿¿¿¿¿!!!!!

Wall Street Journal says contract is through 2010; and AT&T is looking to extend through 2011.
(IMO: Apple will probably give it to them. But, it would be pretty cool if Apple did the same thing as my Samsung Ace, which can work in both CDMA and GSM. I’d pay for it, even w/out the rebate.)
So stop believing silly blog-comments and pick up a newspaper -at least they fact check sources.

Originally Apple was trying to release the iPhone with Verizon, but they were not able to reach an agreement. Latest rumors have an iPhone CDMA June of this year. Granted they are rumors, and I will believe it when I see it, as everyone in the industry seems to make up whatever they want when it comes to the iPhone.
The global market share Iphone is trying to capture is most probable with the GSM network instead of CDMA since I only know Korea and USA to be the only countries that uses the technology that will be extinct in few years. Even though I think VZW is a superior network in terms of coverage and reliablity, I wouldn’t bet on Apple investing the $ to re- engineer hardware. Expect a iphone with upgraded camera, video recorder and faster processor. I would like to see higher quality construction of the body- hate the plastic case.
I think congress should create then pass a bill/law that would require cell phone manufactures to produce gsm & cdma phones. That way it would give us, the consumer, the ability to choose a carrier based on it’s services and coverage. This would create competition and thus create high level customer satisfaction, because of the pure competition. Think about it if att and sprint all had the same phones, would you pay $150 with the iphone on att to have unlimted everything (unlimited voice plan $99, unlimted text messageing $20, required data plan $30)? Or $99 for everything with Sprint. If that’s the case then one can forget about the phones and base his/her decison on plan rates that favors Sprint or coverage that favors att.
Ofcourse I’m happy with my BB curve on the regional network Cellular South. $99 unlimted everything includind roaming, and Cellular South has agreements with mulitple major carriers so their roaming network is unmatched. My two cents though.
Come on people what apple needs to work its on bringing the Iphone to T-Mobile, Since the Iphone came out everyone started buying them and unlocking it to use it on the T-Mobile network, AT&T’s prices are just outragious. I bet that about 50 percent of iphones sold in America where unlocked and used under T-Mobile. If about 4.7 millions iphones where sold under AT&T i bet that if it where on T-Mobile it would be double or 3 times. People on the T-Mobile network are not going to give up great service with the lowest prices to switch to AT&T just for an iphone. And why Isn’t the iphone with every U.S carrier, since 2008 all does countries i visited every carrier in does countries have the Iphone. so qosh everyone would agree with me when i say: apple just let the iphone be in every U.S carrier everyone wants the Iphone but not AT&T!
