Tivo announces software to turn your PC into TV recorder
by Peter Ha on September 29, 2008

Remember back in November, we told you about Tivo jumping in the sack with Nero AG? Me either.

Later today, presumably in the afternoon when everyone is awake, they will finally announce the software kit that will turn your PC into a Tivo box. Set to launch on October 15th, the Nero LiquidTV/TiVo PC will retail for $199, but those with a built-in TV tuner can opt for just the software, which will go for $99. The kit also entitles you to a year’s subscription with renewal fees of an additional $99.

I saw the kit in action and it seems to work well. You can transfer video back and forth between TiVos and the system works just like your standard TiVo. It’s even a bit faster than the standalone box. Nero has been working in the TiVo space for a while now and this “offloading” of the software onto PCs was inevitable, especially since TiVo’s HD pickings aren’t very compelling to consumers (”Cable card? What’s that!”). The issue, however, is stuffing the cable box near the PC, something most TiVo users are loathe to do.

  • What good does that do website publishers that wanna promote Tive TV as an affilite program marketer?

  • Sounds like a good idea. I read that it supports up to 4 tuners at once.

sounds like an expensive version of mythTV to me.

  • It does sound like a good idea, but its already been done. You can get way better features with SageTV, VMC, BeyondTV and other HTPC software programs out there without paying $100 a year for the guide.

  • I think many will enjoy this feature.

  • How is this different from Microsoft Windows Media center?

  • Smart way to use their name recognition. Share of mind when it comes to DVR/PVR always goes to TiVo… althought there are tons like it already out, people would still get TiVo-PC cause that’s what they’re used to.

I wonder how long after it’s released it’ll be out on Torrent with cracked executables. :)

  • A few years ago when I discoverd that TIVOs lifetime subscription was the lifetime of the Tivo box, not me, I switched to PC Based Tivo-like service. It works as well as Tivo, only better. No fees to pay every year, it’s just there. I have expanded to 2 computers and someday soon the TV will be gone.

  • New to DVR w/ Pc… I own a HTPC system with cyber link dvd ultra 9 that can read apparently tivo file formats and dvr file formats. Can I simply use sata to point at the dvr or external tera drive n play on pc. Do I need a dvr software or tivo software to convert. Don’t know what format that a Direct tv HR22 saves. I have high end htpc and love it. The resolution is extreme for audio n video. Want to either just use htpc for recorded shows n movies or even direct to HTPC… anyone know where to send me or give me insight?
