For some reason, Dell and Paramount are preloading PCs with Iron Man

So when you are configuring your next Dell Inspiron, Studio, or XPS system, there is going to be a $20 option to have Dell preload Iron Man on your machine. Yup. Great movie but a little strange business model. Word is that Dell is trying to get more and more studios signed on to expand the selection past this one movie. If Dell is to have their way, you should be able to purchase a slew of movies to fill up your brand new machine and there might even be an online movie store. No word on the DRM specifics besides that a owner will be able burn one copy, but something tells us you’re not going to be able to share this file at your LAN party.

You’re right it is a strange business model. It’s also another nail in the coffin of the movie industry if this proliferates. The music industry died by way of pirated material - period. People can make the I Tunes argument, but that generates a fraction of the revenue that robust cd sales used to produce. People cannot be trusted to do the honorable thing when it comes to intellectual property…they will steal it. Access to movies this way will lead to copying and the bootlegging will crush dvd/blu ray sales. It’s insane that the shortsighted greedy bastards behind this push at some studios don’t see the apocalyptic nature of it. They will kill the movies the same way the music industry has withered. Why, oh why can’t someone in this supposedly sophisticated tech world figure out a way to create definitive anti-pirating, anti-copying protections? A grateful entertainment industry would pay happily for them and it might just put a stop to the horse’s asses making bad short-term decisions.
